Reliability and Performance Monitor
Hi, I'm using Reliability and Performance Monitor for the first time and it seems to have changed quite a bit from System Monitor in Window Server 2003. Is it no longer possible to set up counters to be logged direct into a SQL database? I found this a really useful feature but can't figure out how to do it. The Help menu is not very detailed and I couldn't find any reference to this functionality either existing or having been discontinued. Thanks.

Hi, Thanks for the link. That is a useful document if using the Data Collection feature of SQL 2008. My question was relating specifically to the Reliability and Performance monitoring tool and logging performance data directly to a database. As I collect performance data on a wide range of servers and not just SQL servers I need to use this rather than the SQL Data Collection tool. Any information on how to do this or if it has been discontinued would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, You could still set up counters to be logged direct into a SQL database in the new Reliability and Performance Monitor. Suppose you have already created a new data collector set which belongs to performance counter type. (If not, please create one by running Create New Data Collector Set Wizard.) Please do as follows to change the log type: 1. Open Reliability and Performance Monitor. 2. In the left console tree, expand Data Collector Sets -> User Defined -> New Data Collector Set. 3. Right click the displayed log in the right window and click Properties. 4. Under "Performance Counters" tab, click Log format and select SQL. 5. Press OK to save the changes. I hope this helps. Thanks. Neo.

If anyone has any information on this it would be very much appreciated. Otherwise I'm going to have to look at setting up a system that writes to a log file every minute and then create an SSIS package to import the files. I can't see why Microsoft would remove this very useful functionality though so perhaps I'm just missing something.
