Remote assistance from Server 2008R2 using RDP
I hope someone can help me.
I am busy playing with Server 2008R2 with the intention of implementing it at the end of this year. I like to know at least something of what I am doing before just jumping head-long into implementation. While playing around, I saw something (albeit
briefly) about being able to use RDC for an "interactive session" and I have not been able to recreate the prompt since to I can find out more information.
Is it possible for me, when a user calls, to connect to a PC from the server and interact with that user's session (While they watch) without me needing to install additional software like one of the many VNC programs out there?
The Remote Assistance systems are great, but I find that users of the workstations would rather just pick up the phone and call me than click a few buttons and send me a file. As a result, I find myself needing to quickly connect to their PCs while they
are logged in and look at some error that has popped up on their screen rather than run around to their PC and look.
If I can set up Remote Assistance for me to be able to connect directly in without the need for the user to initiate it or "confirm connection" that would also work, I just need to know how to set it up.
It is all in an AD domain environment, all the PCs are running Windows 7 Pro and the server is running 2008R2 Standard.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated

If you want to control the users desktop centrally you should use the SCCM which will give you the full functionality

1. First of all, it is uncommon to support users from the server (unless you are not concerned with security and like server humming loudly)
2. This is more the client issue, unless you want to use group policy (GPO). Basic how to is here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Windows-Remote-Assistance-frequently-asked-questions
3. If you want to adapt remote assistance (RA) and spread the RA over client computers, the the approprite GPO is here http://nolabnoparty.com/configurare-remote-assistance-in-windows-2008-r2-tramite-gpo/ (Possibly this is in different language,
that you are native, but Google translator may help to resolve details)

I agree with you, the hum is a bit of an annoyance, but I have little option... it is in my office, lived with it thus far. Security is not a major concern for me on this particular server.
I was hoping on using RDC because it launches A LOT faster than RA and it works without needing the users permission to connect. Any ideas on getting around those two points?
So RDC does not really offer any sort of direct assistance... That screen I saw was a little misleading then. I wish I could find it again... Anyway, thanks for the heads up on configuring the RA. I didn't understand a word of the other language but the
parts that were related to what I needed to know I understood. I managed to get it up and running.
Thanks
