Roaming Profiles and DFS on Server 2003
HelloHere is what i have done.I just setup roaming profiles on our parent domain and added just myself to the GPO for the folder redirect. Using DFS I am replicating the profiles/storage folders between two servers. I changed the path to the profile as well as the folder redirect to the namespace for the DFS. All servers 2003 and updated. Profiles are under a sub folder as well as each folder redirect is under a different subfolder. example. Profiles < (account name) Roaming_Profiles < Start Menu < (account name)Here is the problem. All icons on the desktop seem to be locked in place. I can't move them around. I can have windows change their layout by using auto arrange but i can't move icons using the mouse. Here is what i have tried. Was thinking it might be a permissions problem. Checked the shared permission and it is allow everyone. Checked the security permissions and i had the main folder shared to everyone and then had the lower folders securty based on the GPO, when a folder is created it automaticly sets up the securty for the folder, right now it just has the person whos folder it is with full control.Maybe a computer issue. Clean install of vista 64bit business edition and my icons showed up but i still can't move them.Maybe a profile issue. Created new basic account. linked it to the GPO and changed the profile location to the namespace. Same problem Icons get locked in place.I created another roaming profile on a child domain. Without DFS, having the profile and folder redirect pointing to the folder share on a different server.no problems, everything works like it should, without DFS or namespace. On the desktop made sure the autoarrange was unchecked. tried using xp and vista, Same problem.Any ideas?update - 2/25/09: Changed the location for the folder redirection of just the start menu to the local profile location. Seems to have solved the icons being locked in xp, vista is still showing its icons locked in place.

Hi, From the description: "I can have windows change their layout by using auto arrange but I can't move icons using the mouse." Based on local test, we can change the layout of the desktop, but we cannot move the icons by using the mouse when we check the Auto Arrange on the desktop. This is behavior of Windows shell, which occurs on both Windows XP and Windows Vista. Personally, it appears the issue may be not related to the Folder redirection and the roaming profile as they just try to sync the redirected folder with the server and save user profile when the user logons or logoff. To narrow down the issue, please reboot the windows Vista client and then logon it with the local built-in administrator to test if the system behavior is same as you logon it in the domain. Meanwhile, as the issue seems to be related to Windows Vista, I would like to suggest that you may consider initializing a new thread in one of the Windows Vista forums. The engineer and community members thereare more familiar with it and can help you in a moreefficient way. HelloTried to do what you suggested.logged on to the computer with a local administrator account that is not on the domainand i was able to move the icon for the recycle bin around.i then logged on with my account and the icons would not move.just to make sure i double checked to make sure auto arrange was turned off, and it was.tried logging in with my test accountguess what. i can move the recycle bin around...was thinking it was a fluke so i force an update using gpupdate /forcelogged off, logged back in and i still could move the icon.tried a system restartstill worked like it should. checked to make sure redirected folders was still workingdocuments folder was being redirectedseems now it is only my roaming profile that is messed up in vista.Thank you

We have the same problem in the following configuration: just roaming profile+ folder redirection. The OS is Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2The desktop icons cannot be moved by using a mouse. We created a new test user and switched the features on for him one by one, checking icons after each step. It turned out, that it is folder redirection that disables moving the icons. Is it a feature of folder redirectionor is there some workaround?Could anyone tell how to deal with the problem?
