Roaming profile/folder redirection weirdness, missing data!
Server 2003 SBS: Basically... Setup roaming profiles with folder redirection for my docs, desktop, and app data (all on windows XP Pro). Data moved itself fine, people used the computers for a day or two and then things started dissapearing! User1 logs in two mornings ago and her desktop and my docs were moved BACK to the local disk but the folder redirection was correct. i.e. \\server1\users\user1\desktop was redirected fine and working, but all the contents of it was moved back to c:\D&S\user1\desktop. Can't figure out why. After moving the local stuff back to the server where it's supposed to be and letting it go for a day they call me the next morning. Redirection is still in effect but the old data is gone. Not on the local PC, not on the server... One interesting bit, these guys are using 12 of 5 server CALs according to the licensing manager, and it was screaming at the event log all day. I know this needs to be fixed, but figuring out why the data is missing and why it keeps on moving the redirected data back to the local C are my priorities.. I also just realized folder redirection and roaming profiles go to the same place: \\server1\users\user1\ - Sean S.

Hi, I notice that you said “folder redirection and roaming profiles go to the same place: \\server1\users\user1\”, please help clarify it. On the client, please check the redirected location of “My Document”, “Desktop” and “%appdata%”. Please also check the Properties of the user for the Profile path. Are they the same? Normally, they should be different. If they are, please change the locations and check the results. Please double check the Settings of the folder redirection policy, is the “Move the contents of “My Documents” to the new location” checked? If not, please check it. On Windows Server 2003, this option is enabled by default. For the data loss issue, have you backed up the data and files for fault tolerance? If so, please restore the data and files. If not, on both the client and server1, please search the lost files via the Search feature or via command. What is the result? Just for your reference, after enabling roaming profile for an user, there should be a profile folder on both server and the local computer with the user name. For further research, please help gather the following files. Event log on the problematic client ------------------------------------------------ 1. Click "Start", click “Run”, input "eventvwr" and press Enter. 2. Expand the "Windows Logs" node on the left pane, right-click on "Application" and click "Save All Events As"; in the pop-up window, click to choose the Desktop icon on the left frame, input "app" in the "File name" blank, and then click save. 3. Right click on "System", with the same method, save it as "sys". 4. Locate the two saved log files on the Desktop and send them to us. GPMC Log ------------------ a. On domain controller, click Start -> Run, type GPMC.MSC, it will load the GPMC console. If the GPMC snap-in is not installed, b. Right click on "Group Policy Result" and choose wizard to generate a report for the problematic computer and user account (please place appropriately). (Choose computer and select the proper user in the wizard) c. Right click the resulting group policy result and click the "Save Report…" => save report to save the report to a HTML file. Please locate the saved files for research. Upload these file to the following workspace. You can upload the information files to the following link.
