Screensaver GPO

Hi,

We have a mix of Windows XP and 7 client machines in our domain.  Our DC's are 2008R2.  I have managed to create and link a GPO for our 3D screensaver.  This has been pushed out to all the machines correctly.  Unfortunately the text that it displays is the default "Windows 7".  We would like to show our company name instead of the default text.  Can anyone please advise how we can achieve this result through GP?  I have tried to create a custom ADM file and link this to the GPO but it doesn't seem to be working as intended.

All help and assistance is very much gratefully appreciated.

Kind Regards,
JNandhi

Deploy HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Screensavers?ssText3D:DisplayString (REG_SZ)

(through Group Policy Preferences Registry or through a logon script)

Hi Martin,

Thank you for your email.  Apologies but I am a newbie to GPO, any chance of a step by step guide to complete your described solution?  Where would I amend the text to be displayed?

Edit the GPO where you configured the Screen saver. Navigate to User configuration - Preferences - Windows Settings - Registry. Right Click "New - Registry Item". Path and Value Name as mentioned above, value data "Your Company Name". Done.

Martin,

You absolute GPO superstar!  Your advice worked perfect once I changed the "?" for "\".  The reg file amendments were inserted into my registry once a gpupdate was completed and a reboot was performed.  Brilliant!

Unfortunately inserting the above REG_SZ did not change the display text for the screensaver.  Its weird, do you know what could be going wrong now?

I have been googling but at the moment I cannot find anymore information to where the registry stores the screensaver display text.

Your help is as always very much appreciated.

Best Regards,

More information...

the only place I can find anything about the sstext3d.scr is located here:

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop\

I have inserted the displaystring in here and again it is not being displayed.

Also I am, to test the text change, running the screensaver from the run prompt and just typing in sstext3d.scr

JNandhi

I suggest configuring the 3D text screensaver manually, then Import all reg values in above key (Screensavers\sstext3d) in your GPO. It is the only key I found where sstext3d stores ist Settings...

Hi,

I tried to manually set the text to my company name and then searched for it in the registry.  The following are the locations that it showed up in:

HKEY_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Screensavers\ssText3d

HKEY_USERS\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

So I exported the reg key from there, deleted them, applied them into my GPO as per before and then rebooted.  Once back onto my PC-->regedit.  The reistry was amended as intended.  Ran the screensaver from my run command and it's still showing Windows7 as the text.

Tearing my hair out!!  Any other ideas to try?  Cheers again.

JNandhi

Hi Martin,

Apologies for the late response.  I set the text manually for the screensaver and then searched for that text and it pulled back those 2 entries as locations for this text.

I ended up just changing the HKEY_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Screensavers\ssText3d reg entry through GPO and it worked a charm.  In that sense I concur that HKEY_USERS\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop has nothing to do with the sstext3d screensaver.

Just thought I would clarify my earlier post.  Your answer that I marked as the answer is the answer to my orignal post.  Thank you again for passing on your knowledge and for your time.

Kind Regards,
JNandhi

If the user can change it, it has to be defined elsewhere ;-)

I used the instructions to create a custom screen aver using the ssText3d.scr via a GPO and was able to use the GPP to import the registry settings.  Thanks for posting that, it was very helpful!  But... here is what I can't figure out.  When I first created the GPO on my own desktop, and was testing it, I made the mistake of setting the screen saver timeout to 2 minutes instead of 10.  Now, even though I have 600 seconds set in the screen saver timeout GPO, something in the preferences I created is overriding it and the screen saver is only waiting for 2 minutes of inactivity before starting.  I looked in all the registry values I imported into the GPO via the Preferences, and there is not one setting in there that looks anything like a screen-saver timeout.  Any idea how I can fix this?  Thanks in advance.  I just saw a link up here that might answer my question.  If it does I will add the link here.
