Strange Roaming Profile Issue
I'm using roaming profiles with folder redirection on my domain and I have this weird issue where when ever a user logs ontoa client machine, their profile is created on the server under "%SystemRoot%\Users".That is not where I store user profiles. The profiles get stored in the correct place and I beleive they are updating fine as well.If I deletethe profilesfrom "%SystemRoot%\Users" on the server, I don't hear of any problems. Why is this happening?I'm running Server 2008 and Vista clients.Any guesses?

Hi, The profile created under "%SystemRoot%\Users" is local copy of the Roaming profile, this is normal behavior. Generally speaking, you can delete local profiles. If you delete the local profile and the client cannot connect to your Domain Network, users cannot log on this machine. You can disable caching of roaming profiles. http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/WindowsNT/RegistryTips/Disable/Disablecachingofroamingprofiles.html Thanks. I know that...You misunderstood what I'm saying...No regular user everlogs onto the server, they just authenticate against it.They log onto client machines. I know that their profile gets created on the local machine under "Users", that's not a problem. The problem is their profile is being made on the server under "Users".No client ever logs onto the server, why is the profile being made there. This doesn't happen for all users, just some.

Hi, Sorry for the misunderstanding. However, this behavior is rare. If it doesnt occur to all users, it may relate to software used by problematic users. Please check the properties of the profiles and check Event Log to find according records, such as when the profile was created, a remote access must be recorded in Event Log. Let us know more detailed information for research. Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Here is some more information:The roague profile is created at logon. So, as soon as the user logs onto the client machine, the profile is created on the server.I had a CA installed at one point and becuase of the error, the user was issued two identical EFS certificates at the exact same time stamp.I can have one user log onto the client machine and nothing happens.Another user can log on to the same machine and the profile is created on the server. My error logs are loaded with lots of other errors I'm having since the switch to Server 2008/Vista so I can't really tell which ones are related to this problem. All in all, it is pretty random.I deleted all the roague profiles today and will have the user who this happens to a lot try again today.

Can you verify that the profile in the user's AD properties are pointing correctly and not to C:\USers\...\?I would probably try and resolve the errors you're currently seeing in your event logs... You might just kill a few birds with a single stone.

Yeah, the profile location is correct and the profile does get updated in the correct location.I've been pretty busy with the new server system and a lot of things have to happen.Lots of group policy errors...urgh. I should have just stuck with 2003/XP.

Hi, Is there any Terminal Service Remote App on your client, especially Remote App start when user log on? When Remote App was launched on clients, the users profile folder was created on TS server. If not, find a problematic account, delete profile on Server. On the client, boot into Safe Mode and Clean Boot to check if profile folder was created on server. Fixed GP...Now I'm looking into some possible TS issues. You could be right with it's related to TS...added some GP settings to the domain controller for deleting roaming profiles, just on the server's local Users folder. I'll see if that stops them from being created or at least deleted after use.I got more testing to do but this is one of my more minor problems that I have to fix.I'll get back to this later. Thanks guys.

I am having a similar problem, but with Small Business Server 2003 and Vista clients. We don't use roaming profiles; all of our domain users should be logging onto their machines only and their profiles live on the local machines. Recently I have had 2 domain users have local profiles appear on the server. We don't use Terminal Services, so I think I can rule that out. One of these profiles was created yesterday, and there is no login for this user in the server event logs anywhere near the time the profile was created.Any thoughts?
