Temporary shutting down Windows 2003
Good day. Just a simple question about shutting down one of our Servers running Win2003 server for maintenance. The server is acting as a RID, PDC and infrastructure roles in our domain. Services running are DHCP, DNS, WINS and our Print Server. Will there be consequences if we shutdown this server for about 3-5hrs? Of course I don't expect new login will obtain an IP addr but hopefully, I'm not looking at a disaster scenerio where I have to de-promote this server. Pls advise, thks.

You wont encounter any issues, as you said if you do try to log in a computer or turn on a computer you'll get an error from client pcs unable to contact the server...same thing for printing, clients will get unable to connect to printer etc..but any clients already running individual app such as exchange.. IE... Outlook wont notice the different, unless they need files from the server of coarse.i do this all the time.in our domain we have 11 DC's.

Hello,is that the only DNS server in the domain, then you will run into trouble. Also your users are not able to print. I suggest you shutdown the server only if you have redundancy at least for DHCP/DNS or wait for COB. FSMO roles are not needed for logon, Global catalog only if you use Universal groups. And if this is really the one and only domain controller, install ASAP a second DC/DNS/GC for redundancy and failover, this is also recommended from MS. Also a second DHCP server is a good idea with split scope configuration.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Thank you all for your replies. No, it is not the only DNS server but it's the only DHCP server. I'm only worried about the FSMO roles. This is done at night only and we don't expect any users to logon. It's only a minimum downtime, so no worries. All is good. Thks again!
