Two NICs on web server
I have a web server with two NICs. I have assigned NIC1 public IP and NIC2 has private IP to connect web server to the private network that runs DC and Database server, Backup Server etc. Is there any issues with such configuration?I tried to join domin from web server with both NICs enabled and it could not find domain. So I disabled NIC with public IP and I was able to join the domain then. After joining the domain I enabled the NIC with public IP and things seem to be working fine. Any ideas about this behavior? ThanksDarwaish

That sounds like a pretty bad idea to me. I would never connect a domain-joined machine directly to the Internet. There is a very good reason for having your domain machines on a private network isolated from the Internet. You have now effectively bypassed that isolation.Bill

Bill, I have to run sharepoint on this webserver and need to have both forms and windows authentication. If machine is not part of domain how can i do windows authentication for domain users? I joined webserver to the domain for that reason. What is the recommended way for this scenairo?Darwaish

Hi Darwish,You can still have Internet users connect to your SP server without the server being directly liked to the Public Internet via an ethernet card. Just have you router forward the appropriate port (typically 444) to the server's LAN card that has the private address. This way the attack surface is minimized.MiguelMiguel Fra
