Unable to connect to windows update
Hi all,
This problem has been vexing me for some time now. Since May, I've not been able to connect to Windows update from my Windows Server 2008R2 machine. I get the error
0x80072EFD
-2147012867
ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT
however, I can get to the internet just fine from this machine via a browser. Also, I have several Windows Server 2003 R2 VMs running under Hyper-V that connect to the internet and update via windows update just fine. Trace Route seems to be
failing, though, on both the host server and the VM server, even though the VM server successfully gets updates. Any ideas?

Have you tried to connect to windows update from a client computer placed on your LAN? It is because it seems like a routing problem.

The only computer on this LAN is the physical host server (2008R2) and 5 VMs running on it. The guest VMs do update just fine, but they are running Windows Server 2003R2. Does the 2008 Server connect to a different windows update than the 2003
Server?
I checked the hosts file, but there is nothing in it besides localhost. I'm not certain where to check next. I read something about updating the root certificates, but the most current update I found was in 2009. This server is up to date
as of May 2010

Hi,
Can you post the %systemdrive%\Windows\windowsupdate.log to skydrive and
post a link to the file in this thread?
Also, do you have any kind of outbound traffic filtering from the server
and VMs? Does the site
https://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate
open in a browser? Do you get any warnings about the certificate?

Could you please write the error shown when you are trying to update your servers?
To know the used Microsoft update server, you can install wireshark and sniff the outcoming packets when you try to update your servers. This is a link to download the wireshark software:

Thank you, Dave. I did find that KB article before posting. Following the steps did not resolve the problem, unfortunately. I'll post in the WindowsUpdate forum you linked. Thank you, I didnt' find that one before.
