Virtual PC on SBS 2011
Hi,
Is it possible and acceptable to run Virtual PC on an SBS 2008 or 2011 Server to host a small Windows XP machine? I realise Hyper-V isn't supported or condoned.
To explain what we are trying to achieve:
We have a client that requires NetBEUI for some older machines that are very key to the company and can't use TCP or be replaced. They currently have an SBS 2003 Server that handles this fine, however, 2008+ doesn't support NetBEUI from some articles
I have reviewed.
Am I looking in the right direction here, or are there ways to enable this protocol on the newer SBS versions..?
Regards,
Luke

SBS forum is the best place to ask this question

If you have only a few clients you can use
Global Names Zone for the 2011 version.
Also consider deploying a
WINS server if GNZ is not available.
As for virtualisation I recommend installing Virtual Box but for your scenario it is a bit overkill. I don't think you can run Virtual PC on a Server OS (maybe just on 2003, I'm not sure).
Sorry Microsoft.

Pardon my ingorance, but is NetBT the same as NetBEUI..? If so, then this may be the route to go. I found this post, that's all:

My mistake.
No NetBEUI is an older protocol from IBM. Netbios is similar but for Microsoft networks.
In windows Vista/ 7/server 2008/ r2 it isn't supported anymore.
So I think you are right to install the protocol on a virtualised windows xp/2003.
You can also try XP mode on a Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate editions.
