What is the purpose of Microsoft Server 2008 64-bit to automatically install (a variant of) SQL Server 2005 Express (32-bit) at the same time?
I noticed that Microsoft Server 2008 64-bit automatically installs Windows Internal Database, also called SQL Server Embedded Edition? As I understand this is a variant of SQL Server 2005 Express 32-bit. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Internal_Database. It is installed on C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server Question: is there any role in Windows Server 2008 which uses this SQL Server Express Edition? Active Directory? Any other? If it is NOT used by any role or application, how can I remove this edition, so I can install SQL Server 2008 Express 64-bit instead to replace the 32-bit version 2005 Express edition?

Hello, never heard about an automatic builtin of SQL express edition. Does the server come preinstalled to you or did you install it yourself?Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi there, windows 2008 server doesnt install default sql database. If you install additional application softwares like share point , wsus etc... , during installation the database will get install, this will avoid administrators deploying SQL server. sainath !analyze

are you sure? read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Internal_Database I encountered big problems installing an application (HP SIM v5.3 SP1) on my server. It pointed to a Database Server by the name Microsoft##SSEE. I finally found out that this was relating to the installed SQL Server 2005 Express. I am 100% sure that I did not install this version (I should know, because I'm the only one admin manager of this server and I installed all programs myself). Please note that this is a Windows Server 2008 with Exchange Server 2007 SP1 installed. Or do you think Exchange Server 2007 SP1 (64-bit) installed SQL Server 2005 Express 32-bit?

according to the Wikipedia article, the Windows Server 2008 installs the SQL 2005 Express Edition, when Active Directory is installed. Active Directory uses this to store its data.

Hello, this is not correct, AD doesn't need SQL Express edition. AD stores it's data in the %systemroot%\ntds\ntds.dit, which is a ESE database file. Also if you read the article in detail, it states "Active directory rights management" and "is a variant of SQL Server Express 2005". That's what I stated before as well, it is a variant of SQL Server 2005 Express (read my first posting in this thread). You are right: it is NOT Active Directory but Active Directory Rights Management which is using the SQL Server 2005 Express (variant) for data storage.

hi there, as i mentioned earlier, by default OS will not install the SQL server. Any applications which require data to be stored and retrieved back , application will install the default database called as MSDE, with which your application starts working without any problem. If this option would have not been there, then you should first install SQL server then your application and again you will enter into SQL licensing. And i personally recommend to read the documents published on technet rather than any other website. sainath !analyze

Hi, The following KB discussed how to remove Windows Internal Database from your computer, you can refer to: Windows Internal Database is not listed in the Add or Remove Programs tool and is not removed when you remove Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 from the computer http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920277 Best regards, Vincent Hu

I am unable to install the SQL Management Studio Express 2008 64-bit, because it only "sees" the 32-bit WID only, although I installed SQL Server 2008 Express 64-bit on my Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 64-bit system. I installed SQL Serrver 2008 Express on D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\; WDI is installed on C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\ The question is: how can I enforce to install SQL Management Studio Express 2008 64-bit on the same path D:\Program Files? Apparently this tool, by default, only installs on C:\Program Files\. I think the articles in Wikipedia are excellent. There I found out that MSDE is obsolete. For me Widipedia offers the most efficient platform to quickly retrieve information. SQL Server 2008 Express Runtime 64-bit is offered by Microsoft free of charge. No licensing issues.
