Windows 2003 IAS Service Licensing
Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding licensing of the Microsoft IAS server. I know the following:
- Windows Server 2003/2008 Standard Edition supports up to 50 RADIUS clients - Windows Server 2003/2008 Enterprise Edition supports an unlimited number of RADIUS clients
The question is now if the above mentioned RADIUS client license is included in the windows license? Or do we have to buy additional IAS licenses per RADIUS client?
Am I allowed to use the full 50 RADIUS clients on our W2k3 Standard Edition Server without any additional license fee?
Thanks in advance

There are no CALs for IAS. Just use IAS as you would any Windows server feature with normal CALs

BTW, I had not heard about this IAS licensing cap until 2008. Are you sure this also exists in 2003? Just wondering...

I haven't heard of that either. In any case, you would have to be running a pretty large setup to have 50 IAS clients. An IAS client is a remote access server. That would mean 50 remote access servers, not 50 remote access clients.Bill

I want to use Cisco Wireless Lan Controllers for Radius Clients. So do I need one CAL for each Wireless Lan Controller that accesses the IAS for Radius or not? I am really confused about this... The licensing cap also exists in 2003 ...

A radius "client" would be an access point. I would assume the laptops that connect to the access point do not count. You can also ask Microsoft directly.

Microsoft Greece informed me that I would need a CAL for any device (laptop, terminal, phone etc) that authenticates with IAS. That is preposterous of course. What would I do with guest laptop and devices on my Wireless Network? It is simply unmanageable. I guess I will have to choose Cisco ACS.

Well, I guess I can't argue with Microsoft, but I bet their text book answer doesnt really understand the technology or the question. If you look in the IAS console, you'll see that "clients" are the APs, not the laptops they interact with. But I'm not a lawyer to defend you in court so...
