Windows 2003 Terminal Server and Raid Problem
Hi, I have a problem with a Windows 2003 Standart Server which works as Terminal Server for max. 20 Users (Accounting, Warehouse/Invoices). I have no more ideas what it could be, so maybe someone has had the same issue: The current Raid 1 is done with a Promise S150TX Controller using 2x 500 GB with approx. 680.000 Files. Since last week I get problem with damaged MFT and other damaged files. Smart test says that both HDDs are full functional. Surface test says also everthing is OK. The Promise controller use the Main CPU of the Server and has no own RAID-CPU. Has someone expericence with the Software Raid 1 from Windows 2003? Does it work together with Terminal Services? If it work (equal if slow or fast) it would be a temporarly workaround for the next 4-5 months until the server will move to other hardware. Here the configuration of the current server: Dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz, 2GB RAM System: 80 GB SATA150, RAID: 2x 500 GB SATA 150 (Currently on a Promise Raid Controller) Server: Avg. Systemload 30%, Peak Load when Backup with data compression is done. Works as: Terminal Server, Fileserver, Emailserver (Web-Frontend, SMTP, IMAP; not a Exchange Server) PDC: Located on another W2K3 Server. Thanks for any comments and suggestions in advance.

Hello Teco049, No, we use RAID 1 arrays (Dell and HP) with no issues.. I am thinking you problem might be the hardware manufacturer configuration settingsIsaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE

Where are you getting the error messaages from? Try running a MS chkdskcommand , it will verify theMFT tables.I too have had good experiences with Poweredge Servers using Adaptec and PERC Harwared basedRAID.Since you mentioned anupgrade later on, take mainstream hardware RAID into consideration. Although more expensive, it's very reliable according to my experiences.Do you have a good UPS? i.e. Smart UPS?Miguel FraFalcon ITS

Hello Miguel, sorry for delay in answering, I was out of the office for business.. chkdsk says that there is an error in the MFT. After correcting the MFT some files are missing. The raid controller has no error in the log... We have a UPS (Inline UPS). No problem with Main Power. For the meantime, until moving to new hardware, any experience with Software Raid and Terminal Server? New Raid Controller wil have his own CPU. Thanks. Teco049

Hello Isaac, I have got an information from the Mainboard Mfr.: If powersupply is not the problem, than maybe the Raid controller and their firmware is the problem. There is no upgrade for the firmware and the standart firmware from Promise can not be used for an upgrade or error correction on the raid controller.... Powersupply is new and has no problems after testing so I will say "goodbye" to the MB Mfr.

OK, maybe you have some soft errors.Use a memory utility like Michael Tulacek's Gold Memory from download.com check the RAM extensively. Corrupted RAM puts corrupted data on the HD.Turn off the Cache on the HD's if possible, it will slow performance but bad cache can also cause problems. You can also try a utility by Gibson Research called Spin Rite (www.grc.com) it will do a pretty extensive scan of the HD's surface and attempt to fix errors. Do it on the weekend because depending on the size of your HD it can take a verrrryyyy Loooong time to complete. But it does a great job of fixing soft data errors.Miguel FraFalcon IT ServicesMiguel Fra Falcon ITS Miami, FL
