Windows Server 2008 R2 freezes
Hello,
I am using a Proliant ML110 G6 with 1 processor and 3GB memory. I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation, installed from the HP Windows Servers 2008 R2 Foundation CD and license.
Irregular the system freezes. When looking at the VGA output (console of the server, with USB mouse and keyboard), I still see the Windows desktop (when logged in on the console of the server), but the time in the system tray doesn't run any further. Also I
can't use the keyboard or the mouse, the system just freezes. It is not possible to connect or ping to the server, or connect to RDP anymore when the freeze has occurred. Any still open RDP sessions are getting the same problem: The windows desktop is still
visible (or the last running application) but the system tray time isn't correct anymore.
The system can only be rebooted by pressing the poweron/poweroff button for 5 seconds, or use the HP iLO reboot functionality.
The system isn't doing any scheduled tasks when freezing, also, the time of freezing is just random and not always the same. Last time the server did run for like 2 weeks before freezing, but some other time it took only a few days. The server isn't configured
for stand-by or such
Troubleshooting steps taken:
I did already apply all Windows (security) updates for this system, also I did update all the HP firmware by using the HP update utility for the HP Proliant ML110 G6, which did update the packages by FTP.
Already got a case submitted at HP, no hardware issues can be found....

Hi Geert,
Do you have any third party application installed on the server in question ?
What roles are installed in this server ?
Start troubleshooting with Clean Boot method below mentioned article should be applicable to Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation as well
http://www.intelliadmin.com/index.php/2009/06/clean-boot-into-windows-2008-and-vista/
Disable all non Microsoft services, reboot. Review for a few days, which would highlight whether the issue is caused by a third party application or not.
Do you have any AV client installed on this machine ? If your answer is yes, disable real time protection for a while and see if that makes any difference.
Also, you might want to use perfmon to see if there are any memory, cpu or disk I/O overheads.I do not represent the organisation I work for, all the opinions expressed here are my own.

Hello Santosh,
Thanks for your reply.
The server is an application server for some third party applications, including Microsoft Active Directory, Remote Desktop Services and file/print services.
The problem occurs occasionally and occurs when the system isn't used by a user. Sometimes it's freezes 2 times a week, last time, it happened after 8 weeks. Because the server is in production,
I can't disable all services and let the server run for like 8 weeks without using all of the components.
I already disabled the AV protection and changed the AV product.
HP Support suggested some, but I did already apply all security updates and HP firmware updates. The system still freezes sometimes.

I would suggest you to verify if the third party application is supported to run on WS 2008 R2 foundation ! incompatible applications might as well cause intermittent issues as described in your post.
Also, update the third party application if updates are available for that.
