Hi, I suggest trying the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: Step 1.Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically ============================================== 1. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter". 2. Right-click the network connection and click "Properties". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 3. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and click "Properties". 4. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". 5. Click "OK". 6. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties". 7. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". 8. Click "OK". 9. Reboot the computer. After trying the above steps, please check updates in Control Panel/Windows Update again. If the issue persists, I suggest we also reset the Proxy. Step 2.Reset Proxy =========================== Reset proxy (for LAN connection) ------------------------------------------- 1. Click the Start Button, type "inetcpl.cpl" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter. 2. Switch to the Connections tab. 3. Click on the LAN setting button. 4. Clear the entries in "Use automatic configuration script" and uncheck "Automatically detect proxy settings." 5. Click on the Advanced button. 6. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section, 7. Click OK, and return to the previous window. Uncheck "Use Proxy Server for your LAN", and click OK to accept the changes. Reset proxy (for Dial-Up or VPN connection) ------------------------------------------- 1. Click the Start Button, type "inetcpl.cpl" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter. 2. Click on the Connections tab. 3. In "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings" area, is there any connection listed? If so, please highlight it, and click Settings button. 4. In the proxy settings area, please click on the Advanced button, and delete any entry in the Exceptions section. 5. Click OK, and return to the previous window. Clear the proxy server address, and uncheck the option "Use a proxy server for this connection". If the issue persists, please temporarily uninstall the anti-virus program, if we have. We can reinstall it later. Step 3.Uninstall anti-virus program ======================= 1. Click Start and Control Panel. 2. Click Uninstall a program in Control Panel Home mode. 3. Highlight anti-virus program and click Uninstall. 4. Restart the computer and run Windows Update to check the issue. Please let me know the result. Tim Quan - MSFT

Tim,Thanks for your interest in my problem and help. I tried all the suggestions you posed to trouble shoot this problem but I was not successful in updating my server I am still receiving the same error message. Let me add that this is a newly installed machine with no anti-virus or any other applications installed on the machine. All I have done is the following,1. Installed full version of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise addition2. Set my host name3. Set time zone3. Enabled remote desktop4. And disabled the firewall.5. Machine automatically gets its IP from the DNS server. Thanks again,Hector

Hi Hector, Thank you for the reply. Now lets try the following steps: Step 1 Rename Windows Update Temporary folders ================================= 1. Click Start, in Start Search item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter. 2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window: net stop wuauserv net stop Cryptsvc cd /d %windir%\SoftwareDistribution rd /s /q DataStore ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old net start wuauserv net start Cryptsvc 3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the location. 4. Refer to the Desktop and right click the register.bat file, then choose Run as administrator. 5. You will see a DOS-like window processing. Step 2 Clean Boot ============================ This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click the Start Button, type "msconfig" in the search bar and press Enter. Note: Please click the Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System" 4. Test if we can update the system in Clean Boot. Note 1: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later. Note 2: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to Normal Mode after we get this issue resolved. Please let me know the result. I tried the steps you mentioned, however after restarting the server I did not see the "System Configuration Utility" window appear. I continued to attempt to update and got the same error message again. Thanks,Hector

One thing that I observed and want to make sure I am doing correctly is that after following your instructions in step 2 and 3 of your instructions, when I go back to msconfig it looks like the changes have not been committed, If I go back to the "services" and "startup" tab everything is the way it was before I made the changes? Thanks Again,Hector

Hector, by chance are you using this as a FM ware instance? I ran into the sam issue. to resolve.. 1. Disable windows firewall 2. connect to the server via remote desktop. 3. run windows update. thats it. worked fine for ma after that. CEH

The cleaning of the Windows Update Temp files worked perfect for me on a Windows 2008 server.

I think it is absurd that I waded through all these forums about these errors only to find that one KEY thing had not been mentioned. I had to activate windows in order to get the updates. This fixed the problem. Hope this saves someone else some time.
