help installing Active Directory
I just installed Windows Server 2003. I want to make the computer a domain controller, but when using the wizard, "domain controller (active directory) doesn't show in the list of roles that can be added. If I go to add/remove component, "active directory" is already checked. I don't know what to do.

runnning 'dcpromo' on Win2k3 box should take you through the required steps. If that doesn't happen, post a UI of what you see on the machine so we know what's going on..

dcpromo doesn't work. It tells me I have to have an SSL certificate installed in IIS. I did get it working. I had to uninstall Certificate Services in add/remove programs>add/remove components After I did that and then restarted, the "domain controller (active directory)" option appeared. Anyone know why Certificate Services causes this problem ?

Yes this is a safe guard to prevent the a Certifcate Services server from changing domain once Certifcate Services is installed (or from moving from a workgroup to a domain). I imagine this is by design. My Microsoft Core Infrastructure & Systems Management blog - blog.danovich.com.au
