sending email on event
I am trying to get our Server 2008 R2 file server to send an email when an event is logged in event viewer. I have set the task linked to the event id and set the send to send from and smtp server fields. But the task does not send an email
when the event is logged. I am missing a piece and do not know what it is. We have an Exchange 2007 server that i am sending to as the smtp server. What setup am i missing to make this work?

Any errors in the event log?
Follow the instructions in the following blog:

No errors in the event log. The procedures in the blog are pretty much what i have followed to set it up. I also set up a basic task that was just to send an email. I ran the task manually and it runs but the result is just a code.
0x80040213 I haven't done a search on that code result yet.

Sounds like a few things might be the cause... if you have a local AV client, it might not be allowing the traffic. There may be a firewall blocking the traffic. Try disabling AV and the Firewall, just to temporarily try and narrow down the
problem. Also you might try to telnet to SMTP from the sending server, to the SMTP host and see if it responds. Telnet Client is not installed by default on 2008 R2... after install, telnet <IP of SMTP> 25 and see if it responds.

OK, i am able to telnet to the exchange server. I shut down antivirus and reran the task. Still ended with the result 0x80040213
By the way, the first time i run the task after logging on, i get a credentials request window. i put in my credentials for the management account that i am using to create the task. Yes this account has an email account on the exchange server.

How about the relay permissions on the Exchange Server? Is that IP in the exceptions list?

It seems like you can’t connect to your Exchange server.
I hope reply is enabled for your server IP address.

Hi,
According to your description, this issue might occur when your Exchange server did not enable email relay permission for the server IP address.
You can refer to the following article to setup the message relay on the Exchange server.

I dont currently have any exceptions in the exchange server. So i have to configure relay for all of the internal servers that i want allowed to send email? I would prefer to use the authentication method as opposed to the anonymous relay method.
Does the server use the task creation credentials to authenticate? Or does it authenticate through a system account?
I will start working on the relay settings on exchange.
Thanks.

I believe it uses the task credentials to authenticate in this case.
