'Shared network drive'
I connected an external hard drive to my wireless router using a USB cable, so that the drive could serve as a shared drive that can be accessed by all computers in my house. I do not have problem accessing the drive from my Vista, but I could not access it from my XP using 'map network drive'. Is there anything that restricts XP from accessing network drive?1 person needs an answerI do too

HiIn most cases when a Network components cannot be accessed it an issue of the account/permission/security of the setting in the components to be accessed.I.e. if your Win XP computer can access other computers on the Network and can surf the Internet the problem is the Network Drive configuration.Check the drives support page and make sure that whatever need to be done on it is compatible with Win XP.In general, these USB ports on Wireless Router are Not a solid Standard and have their hand at time can be challenged by the Systems.Just in case here is the Win XP Sharing info.------------------Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructionsGeneral example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trustedPlease Note that some 3rd party Software Firewalls keep blocking aspects of Local Traffic even it they are turned Off (disabled). If possible configure the Firewall correctly, or totally uninstall it to allow clean flow of local network traffic. If the 3rd party software is uninstalled or disables, make sure that Windows native Firewall is On .Windows XP File Sharing - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040Printer Sharing XP - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/honeycutt_july2.mspxWindows Native Firewall setting for Sharing XP -http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875357In Win XP pro you can Visually see the Permission/Security setting, and configure them to your liking.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/learnmore/accesscontrol.mspx#securityTabWhen finished with the setting of the system it is advisable to Reboot all the hardware including the Router and all computers involved.Jack - Microsoft MVP, Windows Networking. I had tried some exceptions in Windows firewall as well as 3rd party firewall in NAV, but nothing helps. Below are some info to explain my problems further..- The error that I got when I mapped to the drive is "The drive could not be mapped because the network was not found".- I could access the printer connected to the same router the drive is connected, also, I could ping the router's IP address successfully.- I have another XP laptop which belongs to my company. I could access both printer and the drive when I'm connected to the network.
