0x101-0x20017 - Windows 8.1 Pro update

Hey Technet!

I've recently been attempting to install Windows 8.1 Pro on my Asus Pro55 F5SR laptop.
The specs for the laptop are:

- 2GB RAM

- 250GB HHD

- Intel Core 2 Duo T5800

- ATI (AMD) Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series - 512MB

- Windows 8 Pro x64

The laptop currently runs Windows 8 which was installed in December, last year.

I have tried installing 8.1 via the Store, and also ISO, both returning 0x20017 after the first installation reboot.

Along with these, I have also tried performing a Clean boot, disabling firewalls/anti-virus, and performing a PC Refresh. All return the BSOD with no luck.

My system reserved drive is 100MB (however I do not know if this would have anything to do with my problem).

Hardware wise, I only had my Monitor, USB Mouse + Keyboard and USB Hub connected (with no usb's off the hub).

I also have no encryption of any type.

Any help with fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated.
If there is any more information needed, please let me know.

Thanks,

Nicholas

Hi,

According to the Setup log, I would like to know if your system has MSSQL service.

And,please update all drivers to latest versions(include display driver),firstly.

It's important.

Then, I suggest we try the following steps to narrow down the issue.

1.Stop "Windows Update" service.

2.Delete "%windir%\SoftwareDistribution" folder.

3.Restart "Windows Update" service.

If the issue persists, please  check if your system have enabled .NET Framework 3.5 in Windows 8.

Meanwhile, I suggest you upload the dump files so that we can help you analyze them.

Sorry for the late response.

From what I can tell, I believe I do not have the MSSQL service installed.

I do however have IIS installed; which means I have MySQL, I did also find an "SQL Server VSS Writer"...

I have also updated all my drivers, and I do have .NET Framework 3.5 installed.

EDIT:

My apologies; I've looked through my installed programs, and I have Visual C# Express installed, and Microsoft SQL Server 2012. What should I do?

Hi,

Acccording to your description,I suggest you try to stop the MSSQL service to test the result.

From what I can see, there actually is no MSSQL service. I have Microsoft SQL installed because I use it with visual studio, however there is no such service. I did the steps that you told me about a memory dump, however I could not find such a file in the system files.

Hi,

I can confirm what Nicholas wrote - either if I try installing Windows 8.1 from DVD on a blank hard drive, it already fails to boot up to the setup screen. Neither the online and the offline installer (from 8 to 8.1) works, it hangs up with the mentioned error code after rebooting. Altough, I expericenced no problem with the Windows 8 installer. I guess the new 8.1 kernel is not compatible with the Asus F5SR notebook hardware?

Thanks,
Balint

(Sorry for the very late reply).

It seems that it may be a hardware issue. I personally gave up on it. There hasn't been any BIOS updates for the F5SR since 2009, so its the most likely issue.

Hope you had a merry christmas.

(I can properly update the window 8.1 from window 8)

I share this to all in here:

first, you run the setup & remember do not click on the button of "keep personal setting" (This will crack some of the setting & display error 0x101-20017 when the system reboot), so click on new setting & then run on. Then you should be able to complete your installation without cracks.

Sucessful & enjoy window 8.1 !!

Unfortunately I attempted this. It would not even reach the setup screen; and would simply BSOD while booting into setup.

I'm still up for any other viable solutions :)
