0x800703EE (windows 7 backup error)
Hello, I'm having some trouble backing up my files I recently sent my cpu in for repairs and they restored it to it's factory image so I wanted to take this oppourtunity to finally set up scheduled backup. I believe the problem may be the disc I am using (DVD+R DL 8x 8.5GB) because every time I try to back up it for whatever reason states that "The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the open file is no longer valid" Can anyone can elaborate what exactly this means? Once it shows me the error it gives me one of two options. To try to run the backup again, or to change backup settings. I've tried running the backup again but each time I try it says my disc cannot be used I believe this may be caused by my disc simply because it is not rewriteable it is only a record disc... however I'm unsure if I am correct someone please help. I will give more information upon request if what I stated above is not enough.

I think you are approaching the problem wrongly. You should create a system image from the backup tool, instead of backing up. Careful, the system image is creating an image of your entire hard disk, therefore you might need a lot of space, something like an external 500GB hard disk should work. Perhaps your backup would work if you would use the same hard disk. Please do not forget to select the best answer if it helps you! Hi, Before going further, please help confirm the following points: 1. When did the issue begin to occur? Have any changes been made on the computer recently, such as an installation or upgrade? 2. Can you copy or burn the files to the DVD successfully? Based on the current situation, I suggest trying the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: Method 1: Try to back up to local partition or other location to check if the issue occurs again. Method 2: Delete Filter Drivers ==================== 1. Click Start, type regedit and press ENTER. 2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 3. Right click the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} entry, choose "Export", select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save. Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file. 4. Highlight this key ({4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}), on the right pane, and then check if Upperfilters and Lowerfilters value are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them. 5. Restart the computer. Method 3 Reinstall the CD/DVD drive =============================== 1. Click Start, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter. 2. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. 3. Right-click the CD/DVD drive and click Uninstall. 4. Restart the computer. Here is a similar issue with special cause. Hope it helps. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/9f12f4e0-e2b7-4163-acc3-8cacb8a8997c Best Regards, NikiPlease remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
