AVG Free work ok?
I am installing Windows 7 Beta on my new laptop now. I have been using it on my desktop, and am using Kaperski's on the desktop but would like another antivirus on the laptop because I don't like how the windows 7 version of kasperskys expires on April 11th. I was thinking of using AVG. Is there a special windows 7 version of AVG to use, or will the regular AVG Free antivirus work fine? Anything special I need to do during the install, or standard install as if on vista will work?

I think there are some issues withAVG (Free) it, latest version as of about 6 weeks ago- after installing it on a Dell Mini 9 the sytem would no longer reliably wake from sleep. Worse still when removing AVG it nuked the machine and it had to be re-imaged.

There are some threads on this forum about avg, kapersky, norton and avast. The solutions recommended by Microsoft do present some issues.A solution NOT recommended by Microsoft is Avast. I use avast home edition behind a real firewall. No issues.Stopped using Kapersky 6 months ago when it bsoded my computer a bit too often. As far as AVG is concerned, I rather like the full version, but when tested, I'm not sure the protection of the free version eguals the full version.Norton or Symantec are to be avoided in all cases because they are too intrusive. Mcafee was good a couple of years ago, but has become a ressource hog.RegardsRem

The Microsoft Anti-Virus partner list is currently over at:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/antivirus-partners/windows-7.aspxAnother nice article third-party about A/V and Windows 7 is the How-To-Geek:http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/list-of-anti-virus-software-compatible-with-windows-7/HTH,Justin

Running AVG 8.5 Free Just fine on Win7 beta 7000 - You just need to have the tdx.sys fix installed (resolves some network based and AV issues with regard to the network drivers).

I installed the AVG internet security package trial version 8.0.237 and it works fine. Updating windows7 is only possible when I stop the AVG firewall.Adding avgupd.exe to the executable-list does not solve this problem. Does someone know a sollution?regards, Gerard

Found out that I have error code 0x80072EE2. According to MShelp I have toadd the Windows Update websites to a firewall exceptions list:http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/dca75593-6b39-4563-ba62-35de98ea98ea1033.mspxAre these websites the same for Windows7? How can I add these to the exceptions list? Searched their websites, but did not find anything.regards, Gerard

hiI dont know if microsoft use static ip address or sites for updating. I know they varied for onecare and in fact used servers on another network not on microsoft. If you run a command prompt at start up and run the (netstat -a) commandand run every minute or so you will see all the active connections and it gives the local ip and port and the distant ip and port. If you catch it right and do a search on the ipaddress then you will find one of them is microsoft. Do this just after booting and you should catch it but be warned its not the same address every time. at least you can compare them with the ones given above. all the best malc.

Since the servers address' change constantly, there is no IP address to add. You'll need to use the URL. See if there's a subsequent trial version of AVG Internet Security to replace the Version installed. The only information I could find involves the " Firewall Configuration Wizard ". Runs perfect. No issues so far.W7 Beta running on an AMD Semprom 3200+ (1800Mhz) with 2 Gbs of RAM and a built-in Nvidia 6100 VGA, and mate, it runs like a charm! And now on my VAIO FE31M Laptop.
