I have the following problem 1. I have a D-Link Router, to which, 2 computers are connected (Through wires) a PC and a laptop. 2. The laptop can't ping the PC through the IP or name, however, it can ping the router. 3. The PC can ping the laptop fine, even can ping itself. 4. Both are having a static IP addresses, NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled in both. Would some body please tell me what to do ?

Check the IP Configuration on all the PCs (IPCONFIG /ALL). All of the systems should have unique IPs on the same logical subnet, same subnet mask and same default gateway. If DHCP is not enabled, then your devices are all configured with static IPs, I assume. Did you check the IP configuration on all of the PCs? Dear, JM First of all I would like to thank you for your deeply-appreciated help, second let me re-inform you with the whole problem again, but before that, yes I have a static IP addresses in both of my machines (192.168.1.2 for the PC & 192.168.1.3 for the laptop), and I have tried to change them but in vain. The problem is that I can ping the PC (192.168.1.2) from itself, but not from the laptop, and can ping and open the laptop (192.168.1.3) from the PC but not the opposite. I have been looking for an answer for this all over the internet for about 9 hours by now, sorry for bothering you but I really need your help. Thanks in advance.

Let me guess - the desktop is running Windows XP and the laptop is running Windows 7, am I close? Since you don't have a *real* DNS server the router is also performing that function. Routers are rather simple devices when it comes to DNS, the only know of the computers they've assigned addresses to via DHCP, which you're not using. With an XP or earlier computer this doesn't matter as much because they can fall back to NetBIOS broadcasts to resolve names into addresses. However, Vista, Windows 7 and Server 2008 rely almost exclusively on DNS for name resolution, and your router's DNS table doesn't have anything in it except itself (that's why a PING from the laptop can still resolve the router's address.) So the solution: add the addresses and names to the computer's HOSTS file (in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder.)

Dear, Bob Reese I would like to inform you that both of the computers are running the same version of windows (Windows 7 Ultimate x64), and both are having a static IP addresses and both are having the NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled, both are connected through wires to the router and both IP addresses and names are assigned correctly, the only thing that is driving me crazy is that I can ping the PC from itself but not from the laptop. I can however communicate with the laptop normally from the PC (As regards ping by name and IP address and opening through windows explorer) but not the opposite. Thanks in advance.

I am clear on your description of the problem. This is likely due to one of two issues. Firewall or IP configuration. Those two items are the easiest to resolve and rule out. If you have validated that its not a firewall problem on the computers, I would validate that the IP configuration is correct on both machines. If you would like for me to review the configuration, you would have to copy/paste the results of IPCONFIG /ALL from each computer. From an IP perspective, the two nodes should be able to communicate with each other, based on configurations posted earlier. I do not see anything in the config that should prevent the two nodes from being able to send/receive ICMP packets. Of course, for two nodes to communicate with each other on a layer 2 network (same segment), each computer will need to be able to obtain each other's MAC address. If you open a command prompt on each computer, and type arp -a, you should see the other's PC's IP address with its MAC (after you try the PING command). If you do not see an entry, there is no way the computers will be able to communicate. You must ensure that there is no firewall application on either computer preventing the systems from communicating from each other. Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.
