Accessing XP 32 bit IDE drive from Windows 7 machine via usb
When we need to recover data from a machine/disk we use a USB enclosure. I have a working IDE drive formatted back in 2004 XP 32bit. When I plug it in via usb enclosure on Win7 64bit. It installs correctly and shows up, but I cannot access the drive: "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure all required file sys drivers are loaded and vol. not corrupted". It is not corrupted" What can I do to access this drive? Thanks, Scott

Recover data implies that something happened to the machine. If not, (I hate to recommend this, but I must), download and run from bootable media (no installation required) the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (http://www.ubuntu.com/). See if you can mount and recover the data from there. Unfortunately, there are many times in which Windows wont recognize its own file system due to corruption (most likely, your XP drive is corrupt, you just did not know it), but various flavors of Linux can mount and read the NTFS volume.

Darien Thanks for the suggestion ufortunately Ubunto live did not see the hard drive. It does see the drive (also saw my Hard drive and another external drive) but will not mount. Says it cannot find/see the partition table.

Hi, Please check if the drive is recognized in disk management. If there is no data in the drive, try to format it for testing.
