Airport Extreme Base Station & Windows 7 -- UGH!
Help! My connection is pure "junk". I am running Windows 7 Professional with Comcast. I am directly connected to the AEBS and broadcast WiFi to the Airport Express downstairs. When running speed tests via www.speedtest.net I am getting less than 1mb up & down. I have set the Ethernet WAN Port @ 100mb/Full Duplex (previously it was on automatic without any change). This may sound stupid, but does my ethernet port on on my desktop have a MAC address that I need to add to Access Control? What settings do I need to change to get ANY improvement on my directly connected speed? This is getting REAL OLD! :) Thanks!

Hard to say, but some comments... I wouldnt set any network interfaces to a static configuration such as 100mb/Full Duplex, UNLESS you are absolutely sure, 100% that the other NIC that its connected to has the same configuration. I wouldnt think you need to do anything with the MAC unless you had no connectivity what so ever. It sounds like you have a slow connection so adding the MAC in somewhere is not going to make it faster. Have you verified that you have the proper driver installed on the Win 7 computer? Can you test with another computer to see if you get the same result. Another router to test? This will help you determine if its a computer problem, router problem, and/or Comcast problem. Hey JM, Thanks for the quick reply! Switched it back from "full duplex" to "automatic". Verified via the Linksys that the Comcast connection is great, so it has to be a setting within the AEBS. I'm tempted to just toss the damn thing. I was thinking ... maybe I should assign a port for my computer only and then assign available ports for wireless. What do you think? What is the safest and most efficient way to do this?

Not sure what you mean by " maybe I should assign a port for my computer only and then assign available ports for wireless".. Are you saying keep your computer connected directly and the others wireless? Dont give up on the Wireless device. keep in mind that wireless technology is basically the same thing as "shared ethernet", also known as a HUB. Therefore, the slowness could simply be because of other traffic causing a slowness on your network. The problem with the wireless is that unless you lock it down by MAC filtering and other measures, other outside users may be eating up your wireless bandwidth. You should refer to the documentation and check to see if you have all of the correct settings in place. Another thing is that if you are using Wireles G, but have it set to Wireless B and G on the access point, its going to slow you down to B IF there are other B nodes connecting. are you using the Airport Express "downstairs" as a repeater? wireless client? also, It isn't clear to me if you are having a problem with wired or wireless connections, or both. I once had a Dell Laptop with an Intel GigE NIC which had to be configured specifically for the port speed of the LAN connection or else it performed like a 10meg connection. You shouldn't have to change anything on the router. Can you provide details ? On Tue, 22 Mar 2011 22:59:46 +0000, daustinb wrote: > > >Help! > >My connection is pure "junk".
