Application Hang
Win7 Pro 64bit, Phenom x4 965, 4gb Corsair Dual matched. hardware makers drivers installed. Only mainstream business data apps, no new HW or apps, inc add-ins installed. Been running fine 24/7 since March Recently suffered a couple of App hangs, Event ID 1200, when this occurs unable to end the process in Task Manager, Excel 2007 being one such hang, when it happens I'm able to restart another instance of excel, but the origonal excel sheet remains 'hung' Other Office apps, eg Outlook also running at the time are not effected. The only way to recover is to reboot the PC (a simple reboot) the process is ended imediately, On restart I can then continue using the App. Event Viewer reveals no problems other than the App Hang. Drive and memory testing utilities reveal no problems. I'm a bit puzzled as to how else to pin this down. Thanks, David

Have you run Office Diagnostics and Repair?

Of course, which detects no problems, but then the hang is not Office specific
September 5th, 2010 5:59pm

I would run chkdsk /R C: and then sfc /scannow. Then try a MemTest.

chkdsk will need to reboot to check the boot volume. After chkdsk is done run sfc /scannow.

The hang is intermitant, last occcured on 03/09/2010 allthough Excel has been in use daily since that date. Note attempting to close the problem app via Task Manager>Processes doesnt end the process. Have you tested the clean boot? I noticed that you listed PM3.exe, this is a Program Manager Basic process, the hang can occur if you get spyware or virus infected. Please update the security software to the latest version and perform a full scan on your computer. You may need to test in Safe Mode and see if the issue occurs. The system is clean (both AV and malware) all detection apps are up to date. I cannot replicate the problem, at will, its intermittant. Today I had a hang in Excel2007 and CuteFP pdf writer and Paperport. Outlook was not affected nor was Word, both continued to run. I find it a little odd that I'm unable to end the problem process in Task Manager, and with excel I'm able to start another instance and work happily on that. I've run further extensive memory & drive diagnostics without finding any problem Acronis TI creates & verifies an image without problem, and that would usually baulk if there was any memory or hw problem

If the issue appears again, you could use ShellExView to track the exact cause: 1) Download ShellExView v1.41 Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. 2) Right-click the "shexview.zip" file, select "Extract All", the Extraction Wizard will prompt. 3) Click Next, input "C:\ShellExView" (without the quotation marks) in the "Files will be extracted to this directory" textbox. 4) Click Next and click Finnish. 5) Open the "C:\ShellExView" folder and double-click the "shexview.exe" file. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. 6) Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard. 7) Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes. 8) Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved. Will come back to you on this, I'm out in the field for a couple of days. FWIW An Access app just hung, couldnt end the program or process, but I was able to fire up another instance and that ran fine. I have run with a partial clean boot, all startups dissabled and half non MS services, but that didnt help.

I've now installed ShellExView and disabled as in (6) As the problem has allways been intermitant I'll report back during the next working week
September 11th, 2010 3:28am

Having installed ShellExView and disabled as in (6), 10 hours later; This morning, access hung, could not end the App or Process via Task Manager. Was able to start a new instance of access and complete my work. CutePDF Writer also hung, again unable to end the process, a new instance didnt work. Rebooted PC, hung processes ended immediately, on restart was able to continue with both apps

As the issue occurs in Clean Boot environment and ShellExView doesn’t track any third party cause, I am assuming that there may be due to corrupted system files. You may need to perform an In-place Upgrade to repair the whole system files and see if the issue persists. In-place Upgrade is a special upgrade process to repair the system. In-place Upgrade will not affect settings like photos, movies, documents, etc. that are saved on the computer. It won’t require activation again. 1) Perform a clean boot in the current operating system. 2) Insert the Windows 7 Installation Disc to your DVD-ROM drive. If AutoPlay pops up, click “Run setup.exe” directly. 3) Click “Install now” on the “Install Windows” screen. 4) In the “Get important updates for installation” screen, it is recommended to select the first option to download latest updates for installation, if Internet access is available. 5) Check the box “I accept the license terms” to agree with the installation license and click “Next”. 6) In the “Which type of installation do you want?” screen, click “Upgrade” to perform the In-Place upgrade. Then, follow the wizard to finish the In-place Upgrade process. I'll certainly try this, allthough as the problem is intermittant and not application specific I'd have thought that the chance of a file being corrupt was remote. I'm also going to try Dependancy Walker, to see if that sheds any light. During the last working day all apps have been flawless in operation (A win repair not haveing been done at this time)

Well system ran 24/7 until this pm, without issue. Suddenly got a series of BSOD's. Loaded Windbg, it identified an issue with afcdp.sys, an Acronis TI file. Performed a clean boot, ran some apps, they acted as though there was a display driver issue (scrolling wasnt right). Installed latest graphics makers driver. System still wasnt performing right, eg trying to print a Word doc and envelope was hard work, Word kept hanging. Also attempted to run both excel & word through Dependancy Walker, neither would run Attempted a repair installation of win, stuck for two hours at checking compatibility stage. Aborted, rebooted (clean boot) tried again, stuck again at same stage. I'm wondering whether at this stage to bite the bullet and clean install PS Again memory and HD testing utilities showed no issues

Whoops - Just realised the attempted win repair created a Compatibility Report, on the desktop, reviewing this it stated ' the following issues are preventing..........' Storage Controllers: AMD AHCI Compatible Raid Controller. However during the installation I installed the driver via usb. Later, running the driver update wizard states I have the latest driver. Gigabyte site does not have a later driver. The motherboard is fully win7 compatible. So I figure, a motherboard problem?

Finally figured it out. I was running mirror raid on the motherboard controler, seems this was the problem. Broke the raid, rebooted with raid disabled in the bios, was then able to run a win repair, which took several hours. System now running fine. I have a suspicion that the mirror was out of sync, something I've seen on another onboard raid sys some years ago, when the maker admitted there had been problems.
