Backup Question - Transferring files from one computer to another
Hi,I have two computers (a Dell Dimension 3000 and a Dell Dimension 8400) and I am trying to take all of the files off of the Dimension 3000 (80 GB hard drive) and put them on the Dimension 8400 (160 GB hard drive) by way of external hard drive. I am using a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop External hard drive (1 TB) for this process.I was wondering if anybody knew if:When I backup the files off the newer computer (Dimension 8400), will they overwrite the files off of the Dimension 3000?What I mean is: Will the "New" my documents wipe off the "Old" my documents?I would like to keep both sets of files on the hard drive, in case I ever need them. Thanks for any help!1 person needs an answerI do too

This would really depend on the backup method or the backup software that you use and how you have it handle duplicate file or folder names. In generalcopy utilities will ask for confirmation while backup utilities will overwrite if the file is changed. But, almost all of these utility have switches or options that allow you to set this to your liking. Which program or utility are you using to do this? Are you wanting to do a real backup of the files or are you wanting to synchronize them?Copy or backup would generally not remove or "wipe" all the contents of the backup directory but unless you want to synchronize the files why not simply send the backups to a dedicated folder, like "My Old Docs"?John

That doesn't really tell us much, we would need the actual name of the product to give you more help. I don't use Seagate software products so I don't know about them, I would think that the software would compress all your files and create a single backup file, if you later need to restore a file you have to extract it from the backup file. You will have to read the manual and help files or someone else reading here who is familiar with Seagate backup software might be able to help.John
