Backup fails due to including a network share source location
I have configured Windows 7 Pro 64 native backup utility on my Dell E520 (1.8G CPU, 4G SDRAM, 500GHDD) to back up to my (1TB X-RAID) ReadyNAS Duo device at its IP address (lets say 192.168.0.100), so I have configured Backup to use \\192.168.0.100\ as the destination. I let Backup choose what to backup, and kick it off. It chugs along (~90% of the 100M ethernet bandwidth for several hours!!), but then the backup fails, indicating "Backup shipped backing up \\192.168.0.100\media as it is not on local machine". On my network, the only network device is the \\192.168.0.100 NAS. I can't see how Windows BU knows to back up from the \media directory; however, itunes does reach my media library at \\192.168.0.100\media through the ReadyNAS built-in iTunes Streaming Server (at http://192.168.100:3689). I guess my root question is: How can I instruct backup to not backup items on the remote NAS device? Thanks

How does it work if you back up to a local storage? If it works, the Windows Backup program should work properly. In this case the root cause can be the compatibility of the NAS. One of the possible reason is the authentication. I suggest you try to change the NTLM authentication level. Network security: LAN Manager authentication level The policy is: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Please change “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”.Arthur Xie - MSFT

The article doesn't appear to apply to Win7: <quote> "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Updated: January 21, 2005 Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2" </quote> Also, I failed to indicate I am on a home network. I also failed to indicate I am just a home user running win7-64 so I can run some engineering applications at home. More detail would be helpful. THANKS

The article is also applied to Windows Vista and Windows 7. Please try the steps. Meantime I suggest you contact the support of the NAS manufacturer to ask the compatibility between the NAS and Windows 7.Arthur Xie - MSFT
