Backup tool failure. 0x80070057
Hi, I am running Windows 7 (64bit) on a Thinkpad T400. Since Windows complained that I do not have set up a backup plan yet, I clicked on the "Solve PC issues"-flag and followed the instructions. I attached an external HDD via USB and chose the default options for backup ("let windows choose"). After the backup started "Backup and Restore" shows only this: An internal error has occured. The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057) Note that nevertheless the backup process continued, i.e. some stuff (~23GB) was written to the backup drive. Now how can I make sure that the backup is valid and restore would work? And how do I fix "Backup and Restore"? Here the forums I found one related issue but there is no solution, yet. See: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/64f2b570-3b92-409c-a2d5-134dd2dd6287 Searching further for solutions I have spotted at least 3 which can be all found in: http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1250796.htm But the solutions seem not right. 1.) Why should I alter my registry settings on a 3 weeks old system? 2.) It is highly unlikely that my disc is physically damaged 3.) How should I walk through the backup wizard if my Backup&Recovery center has nothing to click and displays only that peculiar error message. Does anybody know a properly working solution? Thank you very much, freddy

Hi Freddy,Sorry for the inconvenience caused. Are you saying that 'Backup and Restore' control panel is blank and shows only "An internal error has occured. The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057)" ? Could you please send me the following:1. Screenshot of Control Panel -> System and Security -> Backup and Restore2. Contents of <<SystemDrive>>\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup3. Screenshot of Disk management (Run -> diskmgmt.msc)4. Which build are you running? Please send the above details to sneham_at_microsoft_dot_com (Remove underscores and replace words with characters wherever applicable)? Thanks,Sneha

Hi, Besides the above questions, I would like to know if you can click the "Change settings" option in Backup and Restore center. If so, click it and then change settings as "Let me choose", choose fewer files such as music or pictures and check if the backup works. If the issue persists, try the following steps: Reset repository ============= 1. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without the quote) in the search box. 2. On the program results list, right click the "cmd.exe" and choose "Run as administrator". 3. In the command window, type the following commands and press Enter, one by one. NET STOP WINMGMT CD /D %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\WBEM REN REPOSITORY REPOSITORY.OLD NET START WINMGMT 4. Restart the computer and check if Backup works. Vivian Xing - MSFT

Hi Sneha and Vivian, thank you very much for the replies. I have read them just now because apparently my forum alerts did not work yet - fixed them now. Anyway, I will work through the instructions and provide the missing information in the evening. Thanks again, freddy

This did seem to work for me once I'd restarted. I'm performing a backup now. Checking other threads there's some evidence to suggest that a canceled first backup will put the backup tool into this state. I canceled my first backup because it was about to try to create an image of my whole drive to a location where I did not want an image stored.

Actually for me the problem disappeared. Without doing anything about it I realized that my Backup tool works again and after connecting a HDD I did a backup with exactly the same settings but it worked just fine. So I am cannot reproduce the error. Seems like restarting the system one or several times without the HDD attached did the trick or there were an update that I did not notice in the meantime.

I am running the 32 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium with exactly the same problem. I cancelled my first back up as the default settings were for a DVD and not my external hard drive.Would the moderator advise the same solution?

Hi Murphy103, What is the target that you are trying to backup to? Do you see this error on the Backup and restore control panel page only when the hard disk is connected? What are the locale settings on your machine? Thanks,Sneha[MSFT]

The target was an external drive. Strangely enough the backup seemed to continue running even though the error message was displayed although it hadn't worked. Then after a restart the back-up seemed to work correctly in the same way as it did for KWReid.

Hi all, After wasting several days with trying to get Windows Backup to work, I am sorry to say, that the solution in general to all problems with Windows Backup is simple: Do not use Windows Backup. It's fubar. You can see the full story at http://my-tech-talk.blogspot.com/2010/01/do-not-use-windows-backup.html Tobias
