Black Screen after System Restore
I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop and after a System Restore, the start-up Windows Screen leads directly into a black screen with only my cursor. I tried starting it in every form of safe mode, as well as trying to launch Task Manager or cmd and nothing
will work. What can I do to fix this?

Just a thought, is that a legal copy of win 7? Have you try doing a repair instead?

Yes, the copy of Windows is legal, I believe we either bought it from a licensed technician or the store itself. I can't even get into my account, so I'm not quite sure how to run a repair...?

Is that a branded pc say hp, acer etc or is a DIY rig? If is the former, it should comes with a recovery image or disk which allow you to restore, repair or reinstall windows. (some require one to hit say F5 key to start the recovery)
If is a DIY, it should comes with a CD, all you need is to insert the CD and boot from there. Lastly are you able to access cmos setup in bios?

Hi Marelica,
The thing is that your explorer.exe is corrupted. Normally in this case, you should be able to start your task manager, shutdown explorer.exe and start explorer.exe again. But you said that ctrl+alt+del is not working. Have you tried out WIN+r, to bring
out the run window ??
If that doesn't work, you'll have to insert the Windows 7 DVD and do a repair.

I found the recovery discs that were given to us, and tried running them with BIOS set to booting the CD drive first, but F8 does not bring up the repair option or the Advanced Boot Options...

Neither ctrl+alt+del or WIN+r bring up the run window or task manager. Nothing at all show up once I get past BIOS. And I inserted the recovery discs and set them to boot first, but I cannot access them at all still. No repair option, no nothing.

Care to share what is the make & model of the desktop pc? It would help if you could provide us the exact model of the pc.
