I have a new computer with Windows 7. The previous computer ran XP and I was able to synch my calendar and contacts with the smartphone. This is a huge convenience while out of the office and for traveling. Our IT provider says I am not able to synch my phone with my new computer because they are not compatible. I can't believe it!!! Please help!!!

You're right, don't believe it. Go to Blackberry/RIM's website and get the latest version of Blackberry Desktop Software. I've successfully connected both the 8530 and 9650 devices to Windows 7; yours should be no different.

I have successfully synced my Blackberry Curve 8330 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64. As Bob says, just make sure to download the latest version of the Blackberry Desktop Software from Blackberry's website.
