CD/DVD Drive stalls when installing games, windows 7 32 bit.
I had windows vista at one point with this computer, and my CD/DVD drive stopped working out of the blue. I had to get it replaced. What happened was the drive would not read DVDs. But enough about that, with my new drive (same model) it won't read anything anymore. I pop it in and it takes a long time (longer than it should but not enormously long) to read the disc. When I start installing the game from the disc, the progress bar stops at certain places, with certain files. I try to cancel or exit and the computer slows. The task manager says the installation is still working (doesn't say "(not responding)"), and I've had to use the task manager to shut it down sometimes. I don't know what that does to my computer, probably nothing good. I used system restore to go back 4 days, because I was going to try and edit the registry to fix a "code 19 error". I couldn't find the files required to be deleted to do this registry fix, so I didn't When I was browsing my system restore points, the computer said the game had been installed 3 times, even though it never finished. So I went back thru system restore to fix that, no problems. I was following a video tutorial, about fixing this "Code 19 error" which said it would work for windows 7, but once I googled code: 19 the tech website from MS said this is only for vista, and XP. Does anyone know how I can fix this, or should I just replace my CD/DVD Drive? Are some drives more prone to this error? CAn pushing the tray back into the drive (gently) damage it and cause things like this? I do that a lot, my tower sits at a right angle to me and its easiest to just push it in gently (not all the way).

Hi, I would like to know if all DVDs cannot be read on CD/DVD drive. How about these DVDs on other computers? Check if this DVD drive is compatible with Windows 7/Vista and its hardware connection Regarding the registry, if there is no upper filter and lower filter values in it, you don't need to delete anything. It is to say the issue is not caused by the incorrect registry key. Since you ran Windows Vista previously and run Windows 7 now, I suggest you reinstall the device driver, check the hotfix and try the clean boot. Reinstall the device driver ------------------------------------------ 1. Restart your computer. 2. Keep pressing F8 and then select Safe Mode. 3. When booting in Safe Mode, go to Device Manage. 4. Expand the "DVD/CD-ROM drives" item. 5. Right click your CD-ROM device and choose Uninstall. 6. Click OK to proceed. 7. Restart your computer. The computer will automatically detect the device and install the driver. This is the best solution, however if this does not resolve your issue there are a few other things you should check before replacing the drive; 1) Check the hardware vendors website, ensure you are using the correct driver for windows 7 (a lot of vendors are still shipping hardware with just a driver for windows xp/vista machines) 2) if 2 drives have now failed on your computer, consider that it may not be a faulty drive, but it may be a faulty data cable, before buying a new drive, try buying and installing a new data cable first.
