Can't see computers in workgroup
I am trying to network a Windows XP Pro and a Windows XP Home. I have logged in using the same account on both, , workgroup is the same, Guest is enabled, Netbios over TCP/IP is checked. When the XP Home machine is the first to boot, I can view all computers in the workgroup on it, but I get the error "you might not have permission to use network resources" when I try to browse the workgroup on the XP Pro machine. If I boot the XP Pro machine first, the error moves to the XP Home machine. Does anyone know what might be going on?1 person got this answerI do too

It would help to know if your XP Pro machine has "Simple File Sharing" enabled or not. (Double-click any folder then Tools->Folder Options->View Tab-> Last entry on list). If Simple File Sharing not enabled, then if both computers have same user name, they must also have the same password. If Simple File Sharing is enabled or the XP Home machine, then the Guest account must be "activate" (it doesn't matter if it is "enabled"). Start->Run->"Cmd" then enter the following command in the command window: net user guest /active:yesAlso make sure the Guest account does not have a password. You might also try connecting from the command window... the errors are usually more descriptive. To do this: net use * \\computer\sharewhere you replace "computer" with the computer name and "share" with the share name.Hope this helps, JW

I will have to check on Simple File Sharing when I get back to the machine. I suspect that the answer is no. File and Printer sharing is enabled for sure. The Guest account had been activated, as I had run the same command you posted. I also created a new administrative user on both machines to use for my testing. The password for the user is the same on both machines. I will have to check on the password for the guest account. (It was not enabled when I got there, so I suspect it is still set at the defaults.) I will try to connect from the command line in a day or so when I get back at it. Thanks so much for the help. At least I have a few things to check. If you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate them. LJ

Thanks you JW! My problem is solved. When I used the net use command to connect the error "System Error 67 Has Occurred. The network name cannot be found" came up. I quickly found KB875441 indicating that I needed to increase the registry setting for the LmhostsTimeout entry. I actually needed to add the entry and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the tip! LJ
