Can not run VMplayer after install KB2976978

Hi,

a few day ago I installed KB2976978 and, after, I can not run VMplayer anymore.

VMplayer starts and then it is not responding and I nedd to kill it.

I tried to reinstall VMplayer, then I tried to update it to the last version but the issue still occurs.

I tried to uninstall KB2976978 but it is not possible.

If I tried to uninstall it with from Control Panel but option 'Uninstall' does not appear for this KB.

I tried to uninstall with 'wusa' command but this message appears: 'Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2976978) is required by your computer and cannot be uninstalled.'

Anyone can help me?

Hi mrcpla61,

The KB 2976978 is offered as an optional update for Windows 8.1 compatibility.
Here is a link for reference:
Compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2976978

I have tried to uninstall this KB with administrator command line "wusa /uninstall /KB:2976978" and it could be uninstalled successfully.

Plese take ZigZag`s suggestion to run dism command line to check the health of the system files. Then we could try to uninstall this KB in clean boot environment to have a check.

If the issue persists, we could perform a system restore to recover the machine to the point before we install this KB.

Hi,

thanks for your suggestion.

SFC returns corrupted files; I will try DISM after a complete backup of my PC and  update the thread.

Hi MeipoXu,

I was able tu uninstall the KB; may be I use an incorrect syntax of the wusa command.

Thank you very much.

Unfortunately, the issue persists and I will follow the ZigZag`s suggestion to run dism command line after performing a full backup.

I tried to execute the suggested commands but, unfortunately, the problem persists.

Please note that I uninstalled KB 2976978 thanks to the instructions of MeipoXu.

Have you any other idea?

Hi mrcpla61,

Have the corrupted files been fixed by the dism command line? Have you got any error message when you start VMplayer?

If the corrupted files have been fixed and the issue persists, there is a possibility that the present VMplayer installation has been corrupted.

If it is possible, we could perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point.

DISM command report to have fixed the corrupted file system but fsc still reports a corruption.

VMware Player does not report any error message, simpy does not respond and only possible action is kill the process.

I decided to reinstall Windows.

Thank you very much.
