Please answer all of the following diagnostic questions by number in your next reply (no need to quote this post): • Which version of the Windows operating system am I running? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/which-version-of-the-windows-operating-system-am-i-running1. Is Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed and is the computer fully-patched at Windows Update? Speaking of which, can you even open IE to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com?2. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?3. Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer?4. Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

MS windows version (build 2600.xpsp_sp3_qdr.100427_1636 Service Pack 31. Service Pack 3 is installed for windows XP . I don't know if it is fully-patched at Windows update. When I clicked on the link it kept searchng for updates for a long time and then it froze up.2. Norton 360; Malwarebytes-anti malware; McAffee Security Scan Plus (I don't know how this got on)3. I don't remember if it was installed, but i never used it.I have Century link that patched into my computer and controlled it from there site to fix things. It hasn't been working right since. I went back and told them and they said I need to wipe it clean and start again. I don't want to do that because I think some kind of setting or an activeX issue.

...When I clicked on the link it kept searchng for updates for a long time and then it froze up.The above suggests that you're seeing the effects of a hijackware infection. Please answer all of the following diagnostic questions by number in your next reply (no need to quote this post):1. When does your current Norton 360 subscription expire?2. How long has Norton 360 been installed on your computer (e.g., four years)?3. Can you successfully update Norton 360 manually via LiveUpdate or Intelligent Updater? It ends in about 40 days. I did call norton because I suspected something like that. They didn't help me and said they would be happy to fine tune my PC for $$$. I said if you guarantee you will fix the problem. They said because it isn't a virus, they can't make promises.Norton has been installed for about 4 years...at least. Since I've had the PC.Yes, I update Norton with no problem

Norton (and McAfee) applications are notorious for not upgrading (or uninstalling) cleanly. If you've had N360 installed "for about 4 years," you've probably upgraded several times (e.g., from N360 2008 to N360 2009 to N360 2010). You might try the following... [1][You may want to print the following instructions for offline reference. If a step says to reboot, reboot.]1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe2. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).3. After making certain you have a copy of your N360 Product Key handy, uninstall Norton 360, LiveUpdate and any Norton Add-ons via Add/Remove Programs.4. IMPORTANT! => Enable the Windows Firewall immediately after rebooting.NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #7 below!5. Double-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot.6a. Do a clean install of the 2010 version of your Norton application using your Product ID & reboot: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN NOTE: Do not enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton Anti-Phishing) just yet. [1]6b. OPTIONAL: Since your N360 subscription is about to expire and assuming you have no intention of renewing it (since Symantec wanted to charge you for support), you may wish to install Microsoft Security Essentials (free, including support from Microsoft) instead: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx [1]7. Manually and repeatedly update your current anti-virus application until you get a "no more updates" prompt.8. Open Internet Explorer (only) to this page & run the Fix It: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 9. For good measure, open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & run the Fix It in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes. [2]10. Reboot one last time & test.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[1] Full Disclosure: If your computer is, in fact, infected, there's a very good chance that you will not be able to reinstall N360 or install Microsoft Security Essentials in Step #6. If such is the case, you'll have to format the hard-drive & do a clean install of WinXP.[2] Full Disclosure: Running the Fix It in AGGRESSIVE mode will delete your Update History (at Windows Update website) but not the list of installed updates in Add/Remove Programs.~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

Hi, I just spent about 1 1/2 hrs with Norton and they got into the computer and ran Norton Power Eraser. Nothing is showing up. I hear what you are saying. They want $99 to find a possible hidden virus. Give me a break. Personally, I think it is a setting that is off. I don't know enough about the computer to understand what it is. Maybe Active X or something like that. This all came about after I was trying to clean up my picture files. I deleted the photos and then realized the disk that I put them on really didn't get written. So I pulled them out of the Recycle Bin and saved them back as my pictures. Nothing was ever the same. Maybe the problem was before that, but who knows. would it be easier to wipe my hard drive and reload the software? I hate the thought of that. I appreciate all your effort and time. It is very frustrating to me. Carene

A "wipe & reload" is certainly an option, Carene. That being said, doing a clean install would require several hours of your uninterrupted time whereas the steps I listed in my previous reply above should take you well under an hour.Your choice.~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

Okay, I tried one last attempt before doing anything else. I wanted to make sure my software was up to date. I updated Quicktime Player and a couple other things and can you believe it, I can upload photos again. I have no idea why, but it works now. Carene
