Cannot connect to WPA or WPA2 networks
I know this question has been asked once or twice before, but I've not yet found a solution.... I've got this problem with my Wireless PCI NIC which seems to be suffering from a not so rare problem which stops it connecting to WPA or WPA2 networks. Windows will attempt to connect and ask for a wireless key, but then just sits there doing nothing whilst attempting to connect until cancelled. My operating system is Windows 7 64-bit. The card has the RT6x chipset. I've eliminated the card itself being at fault, because I can boot into a Linux live CD and use the wireless card fine. I've also tried the provided drivers and more up-to-date drivers from the Ralink site with no luck. I can also eliminate the router as I've setup another one from factory settings and the card will connect until WPA/WPA2 is enabled. I can only think that it's a setting on my Windows installation or a driver problem, but I'm using the most current drivers and I can't find any mention of a compatibility problem between RT6x and W7 x64. I've tried the card in another W7 box (32 bit though) and it works fine there. I've tried everything I can find including all the obvious like reinstalling drivers, trying the card in a different PCI slot, resetting the router, using Windows diagnostics but nothing has helped. The exact same card I'm using is in use in two other Windows 7 PCs connected to the same network without a problem. I've also tried 2 other adapters with a different chipset (RTL8187) and get the exact same problem. I hope I have provided enough information. If anyone has any idea at all as to what the problem could be, I'd be very grateful.

Hi Alan, I do not see a 64-bit driver from Ralink for RT6x. Check here to confirm: http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php Check with the manufacturer of the card for a Windows 7 64-bit driver. I would also check the security software firewall on the troubled computer. Try to temporarily disable it and test the connectivity. Try and create the connection from Start\Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center...set up a new connection. That may help. By the way, some routers require that you manually disable WEP when using WPA\WPA2 security in the router configuration.

Thanks for the response. As you can see on that page, there is a 64-bit driver for Windows 7 that's included with the package and Windows automatically detects that and uses it with the device. I've also tried a couple of RTL8187 devices and they have the same problem. I've tried disabling the firewall but with no luck. I've also run an anti-virus check and such, but with no results. Some other things I've tried include an SFC scan and starting up in Safe Mode With Networking; both do not give any results.

Yes, there are Win 7 64-bit drivers, but not for the RT6x. What is the card manfacturer and model number? Are you simutaneously connected to the lan via ethernet when attempting the connection? Disconnect if yes. Try from a command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns then: ipconfig /registerdns

Hi, I found newer driver versions for Ralink RT61-MIMO, Turbo, and wireless lan v2 on the Microsoft Update Catalog. Find your device. Go here: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx Let the add-on install, the search RALINK in caps. You find version 3.0.9.1, select one and view the details for AMD64 architecture. That is for Win 7 64-bit. Windows Update, update driver tab from device manager should do the same.

The RT6x drivers are the same as "PCI/mPCI/CB (RT256x/RT266x)" which have 64-bit drivers. Sorry for not making that clearer. The card I have is a generic card, the model number isn't written on the card but I have the original driver CD which has an older version of the aforementioned RT6x drivers. I'm not connected via ethernet, but the LAN connection does work fine. I'll try the driver from the Microsoft Update Catalog this afternoon and get back to you. Thanks

Ok. Sounds good. It's a slight driver variation, but perhaps that's the fix.

I've taken my PC online using a LAN connection and tried the 3.0.9.1 drivers from Windows Update, but I'm still in the same position. I appreciate the effort you're putting into this for me.

Hi, This issue can occur by incompatible Wireless adapter driver. At this stage, I suggest you download the driver for Windows 64 bit and install it in Compatibility Mode to check the result. If the issue persists, you may need involve the manufacturer for further assistance. Meanwhile, please also collect the following log file for research. a. Download Microsoft Product Support Reports tool from the following Microsoft link, according to your system architecture. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=CEBF3C7C-7CA5-408F-88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en b. Right-click on the downloaded mpsreports_x86.exe or mpsreports_x64.exe, and choose Run as Administrator. c. Agree the License Agreement, and choose This Computer. d. Select General, Internet and Networking, Business Networks, Server Components, and click Next. e. After finishing collecting logs, please choose Save the result to save it to a .CAB file. f. Please upload the log file to Skydrive (www.skydrive.live.com) and then share the link to me. Thanks, NovakPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thanks for your assistance. Compatibility mode hasn't done anything I'm afraid; It's still failing to connect to my WPA networks. I'm going to have access to another PC with Windows 7 x64 later this week so I'll be able to test if the devices actually works with W7 x64. I know that it works perfectly with W7 x86 as I've had both of these devices working perfectly in another PC. I've collected the log file for you, which can be downloaded here http://cid-d0eb0fb80f65c331.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/ALAN-PC^_MpsReports.cab

I'm still no further with this. The issue is not to do with 64-bit drivers as I've tried the dongles in another W7 x64 machine and they connect fine. I've dug up another WPA compatible router and another WiFi dongle with a completely different chipset and manufacturer and I'm still getting the same problem! I can only think of it to be a software conflict with something I've got installed or perhaps a registry entry or configuration file which has gone awry. Is there any sort of connection trace I can run which will produce a log file to try and get to the bottom of this? I imagine something akin to the wpa-supplicant client in Linux would be very useful, but I've been unable to find anything.
