Cannot eject removable usb drive
Cannot eject removable usb drive Hi, I am using Windows 7 RC x64. When I connect my Seagate FreeAgent Go usb drive (NTFS) and use it for some time, Windows doesn't allow me to eject it anymore. I get the following message: "Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it. Close any programs that might be using the device, and then try again later." This happens even if I all my (visible) programs are closed, even Explorer. If I try to find who is using drive E: with ProcessExplorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx), I get nothing. But if I use LockHunter (http://lockhunter.com/?ver=&vertype=pro&sm=main_window_64) the following handles appear: System e:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\$TxfLogContainer0000000000000000002 e:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\$TxfLog.blf e:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\$TxfLogContainer0000000000000000001 I also noticed two diferences when I compare my FreeAgent to a regular Kingston DataTraveler flash drive (FAT32): 1) Only when using DataTraveler drive I can see an "Eject" option in Explorer's context menu. For FreeAgent I have to go to the notification tray usb icon. 2) When I run "fsutil fsinfo drivetype E:" I get "removable" for DataTraveler but "fixed"(!) for FreeAgent. I hope someone can help, I am tired to restart my computer everytime I have to remove my drive. Thanks in advance.

Hi cbrchrt, Have you tested the issue in Safe Mode and Clean Boot? I suggest you check if there is any firmware update for your Seagate FreeAgent Go USB Drive first. You should also update the BIOS and motherboard to run Windows 7 stably. Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. If the issue persists, I suggest you try to reinstall the USB Controllers to check the issue. Reinstall USB controllers ----------------------------- Use the Mouse ================ First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps: 1. Click "Start" button, type devmgmt.msc (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary. 2. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK". 3. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically. Use the Keyboard ================ First, please disconnect all USB devices. Then, go through the following steps: 1. Press "Ctrl + Esc" to open the Start menu. 2. Type devmgmt.msc in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary. 3. In Device Manger, press Tab and use "Up" and "Down" to move the highlight to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". 4. Press "Right" and expand it. 5. Press "Down" to move to the first item and press "Delete" to remove it. 6. Repeat the step 5 and uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all controllers automatically. If the issue persists, would you please upload the System Information to SkyDrive and provide us the download link for analyzing? How to collect the System Information ======================== 1. Click Start, type in msinfo32 (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and then press Enter. 2. Choose Save from the File menu and save it as an NFO file. 3. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder". 4. Send the compressed file to me. Arthur Li - MSFT

I get the same error relating to a variety of brands of USB sticks and USB hard drives locked under Windows 7 RC (Searching the net shows users keep having the same problems trying to eject USB drives under previous Windows versions too - It has nothing to do with a bad USB contoller install!). Sometimes the problem occurs on eject, other times Windows releases the drive with no problem whatsoever. Using various utilities indicates something is accessing files relating to "$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\" on the drive. Surely someone in Microsoft can advise which process creates/accesses these files - In all the problems users have reported not one MS expert has stated this and why it tries to access the USB drive when the user does not want it to (all it reports back in using the utilities is "System"!) This is so frustrating for us users. We don't want to have to shutdown the system to remove a USB stick that is being accessed by some Windows process for no good reason! I have stopped index/search services, told Windows not to have "system protection" on those drives, closed all other programs running in the foreground, stopped background anti-virus programs, used unlocking utils all to no avail. I have -no- problems ejecting the same hardware under Linux. Can somesome please advise why Windows can't be designed to clearly state which process (ideally which program) is locking a file/drive and why it can't close it/flush a cache when the user want to eject it?! Thank you.

Thanks for the quick answer Arthur! Unfortunately I couldn't find some time to test all this, I hope I can do it by the next weekend. But I have to agree with Jason. I don't think any of this will help since I have a fresh installation and all drivers are up to date. What is really intriguing me is why fsinfo show my USB hard drive as fixed and not my flash memory. One more information, I have nForce chipset and I am using the latest drivers from NVidia. Thanks.

I'm having this exact issue. It's mind boggling how difficult it is to find a solution. I suspect we must belong to a minority of people running some strange sequence of hardware/software that's causing the issue. What Would Bill Gates Do?
November 5th, 2009 8:27pm

I have a variety of drives like Jason (above) and get this randomly on Win 7. It doesn't seem to matter what the brand is as sometimes Windows locks it, other times it's release with no problem. At all times the locked file is <drive>\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxtLog\$TxfLog\$TxfLogContainer00000000000000000001 and <drive>\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxtLog\$TxfLog\$TxfLog.blf. Surely someone in MS can advise us what process/program uses/create/locks these files and why?!

I don't think it's a minority given the similar problems I've found (without solutions) via search engines for current/previous versions of Windows unfortunately. Bill Gates would do what the rest of us are tempted to do and yank the darn usb plug/drive out and complain to the engineers! I really don't think Bill would use Windows as intensly as us users do for him to encounter half the things we do sadly... I wonder how much time he spends patching his system/reinstalling, etc ;-) I'm betting this "feature" will be inherited in Win8. Will be happy to be proved wrong though ;-)

This issue mostly can be related to the design of NVIDIA motherboard drivers. Hi, I have a P45 motherboard, latest drivers and i also have some of my usb drives recognized as "fixed" drives instead of "removable" ones... Like my tvix or my WD passport disk. With vista, the tvix was well recognize as a removable media... n`Ahu

I don't have an NVidia based motherboard (Intel based, HP NC6220). The problem doesn't exist running other OS's on the same computer (ie, I don't think it is a problem inherrent with the hardware). I plugged a Seagate drive (in generic external enclosure) in 30mins ago and couldn't eject it (under Win7) as it was locked by the "System"... After having to resort to manually pulling it out switching it off, etc I retried. After reinsertion, Windows started searching the drive as normal (I cancelled the dialog window). Used the drive and disconnected - This time it worked. This seemingly random locking is really annoying... What Windows program/process cause locks the files like those below Arthur? This is the cause of the problem in my view but no one seems to be able to advise. I have the latest drivers already. Same problem occured under WinXP (with latest drivers). Clearly a program/process is creating the above RmMetadata files and locking them preventing the O/S from releasing the drive - Do you know which one?

If the icon on the system tray is showing, if its green then its safe to yank a stick. If its not then something is using the device. If you accidentally enabled ReadyBoost then the stick will be locked as Windows can use it to speed up the system. ReadyBoost is more suitable to a stick on the back of the machine.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! November 28th, 2009 3:14am

It's not showing "green". The system definately reports that it cannot eject the drive as something (A "System " process as reported by other utilities) is locking the device for some reason. No other (foreground) applications are running. Readyboost is not running. The problem randomly applies for usb "sticks" as well as larger drives eb. 1TB. I have ruled out anti-virus/anti-malware processes by having the same problem occur with those products disabled. I presonally think it is some Windows indexing service that is screwy (Although in the past I have tried to turn off the indexing services through control panel as as "track down" automatic services and shut them down and have still had drives locked by something). Under "Indexing Options" under Control Panel only the "Start Menu" and "Users" locations have been selected. Under Win7 when you look at properties of a drive there is a check box "allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties". I am currently making sure this is unselected (can only do this after the drive comes up and presumably after any index process has already started locking the drive!) and will do some more trials...

Win7 won't let me eject 1TB USB FreeAgent Drive. USB Safely Remove util shows this: http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/5999/lockedusbdriveunderwin7.png Checking disk properties it reports (as expected): "This device cennot be used for ReadyBoost". Now that I see what I need to, the software for the free agent package is what is locking the drive. The software is transparent, it is activated by the disk button. I always avoid that type of device and select basic disks, so that I can just copy what I want to save. I have a server so I use that with Windows Backup. In my case the software is not locking the Seagate Free Agent drive (I moved it on the disk and have edited the autorun.inf file previously). My drive doesn't have a "disk button". The problem also occurs on non-Seagate disks. At other times this Seagate is released without a problem.

I'm also experiencing the same problem here... Happened with the previous installation of Win 7 Pro x64 RTM, and still happens after I have done a full wipe and reinstallation of Win 7 Pro x64. I'm using a Western Digital External USB Drive 250GB (3.5" drive). After plugging it in for more than 20 - 30 minutes, the only guaranteed safe way to remove the drive would be to shutdown / restart windows. I have tried plugging in the drive for less than 5 minutes and safe removal of the hard disk from the task bar icon has been successful. Please note that the Western Digital Hard drive utilities are NOT installed here. Its just used as a standard external hard drive. Surprisingly, windows says that something is still accessing the drive, but the hard disk has actually gone into powersave mode (spin down). If I were to use my other external hard drive, an internal IDE Seagate enclosed within a Sarotech USB casing, the problem rarely happens. The system experiencing this issue is a Dell XPS m1530 laptop which has an Intel chipset. Anyone having any solutions other than just yanking out the usb cable? I had no problems with the same external hard drives (WD and Sarotech) when using Vista / XP..

I had no problems with the same external hard drives (WD and Sarotech) when using Vista / XP.. hi , okay have you tried to see if it is in use ?? with sony the problem has not yet happend , neither with iropn key , we use them day in and day out , ...it might sound silly but try a diskcheck of both the usb key and the comp , and visit onecare scanner , link below and see what comes up , it never hurts to try that have a nice day and happy holidayshttp://www.microsoft.com/security + http://www.microsoft-hohm.com/default.aspx + http://www.getpivot.com/ + http://photosynth.net/ + http://seadragon.com/ + http://blogs.technet.com/mmpc + http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/genuinewindows/default.aspx + http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx + https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Shared/Resources.aspx#rss + http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ + http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm + Plagued by the Privacy Center? All my usb drives, have ben checked and are fine. Seems to occur inconsistently but when it does it is a major pain in the ... I'm still amazed not a single Microsoft guru can tell us what create these files!: "At all times the locked file is <drive>\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxtLog\$TxfLog\$TxfLogContainer00000000000000000001 and <drive>\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxtLog\$TxfLog\$TxfLog.blf. It might be the drive itself.I know that all USB flash drives are not the same. I have one out of three that can be made bootable, although I have tried multiple times on the other two. Some motherboards will not boot at all with one of these "wierd" drives plugged in.Last time I had one that would not "eject" I just pulled it, since I knew it was not in use. Windows did not even complain about it.

Just keep telling people to look for support elsewhere, doesn't help. You are not answering them, no one proved yet that Windows is not the problem. Several guys here have similar problems with different hardware and the only common component is Windows OS. Nobody explained yet the following related to the impossibility of ejecting a USB drive: 1) Why Windows System task keeps locking the files described in my original post even if all applications are closed? 2) Why the external drive is being displayed as fixed drive These are Windows related issues. Even if all those hardwares are bad, Windows system shouldn't lock any files on them. At least it should have some kind of timeout scheme with a proper error message. For question 2 the same applies: how can Windows report a USB drive as a fixed drive? Even if the drive is buggy, Windows should know that it is a USB connection and USB connections are not intended for internal fixed connections.

Dabur, it looks like you like to treat others as stupid. Or are you just trying to get points by posting this kind of answer? Of course I wouldn't go to Ford if I had a Toyota car. But in this case Microsoft told me my hardware is certified for Windows Vista when I bought it (and it really was because it works with it flawlessly). And now they still tell me that the same piece of hardware is compatible with Windows 7. In my opinion then I should be able to upgrade my OS and have the right to post a question here if my certified hardware stopped working. I am not blaming anyone here, maybe it is Microsoft's fault, maybe it is Seagate's fault (I have posted the same question to them as well), or maybe it is just configuration issues and someone in this forum is able to help me. Dabur, if you are a MS USB developer/support guy and proves me that this is really not a Microsoft problem, then I will be glad to just wait for Seagate's response and will kindly ask you guys to put a better user error message or a new mechanism that prevents the locking issue. If not, them again, telling people to go elsewhere is not the answer for the problem itself, even if that's the case. Thanks.

Dabur, it looks like you like to treat others as stupid. Or are you just trying to get points by posting this kind of answer?Of course I wouldn't go to Ford if I had a Toyota car.But in this case Microsoft told me my hardware is certified for Windows Vista when I bought it (and it really was because it works with it flawlessly). And now they still tell me that the same piece of hardware is compatible with Windows 7. In my opinion then I should be able to upgrade my OS and have the right to post a question here if my certified hardware stopped working. This is the hardware compatibility logo:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Hardware&p=Seagate%20FreeAgent%20Go%20USB%20External%20Hard%20Drive&v=Seagate&uid=&pf=2&pi=9&s=freeagent&os=64-bitI just hoped that someone could have had the same issue and could help me. (!!) the answer is not to push you away , but to direct you in the right direction ! and if i would not care i would not even bother to have posted at all , ... so make and model of the HD ? have a nice dayScan with OneCare + 50 Windows 7even Tips + Plagued by the Privacy Center? So if the hardware is supported then what do you suggest? I hope it's not to reinstalling Windows each time the problem occurs. If we can run the same hardware perfectly well under other O/S without them having to be certified for that O/S I fail to see why under Windows brand name drives/USB keys get "locked" randomly - and there doesn't seem to be a command/way to force Windows to release them nicely without shutting down the system... Dabur972 based on your comments, it would seem you are saying that it unless the hardware is also made by Microsoft then the problem has nothing to do with MS. It is much more likely that something intermittent (which works regularly but not all times under Win and works all times under other O/S) would be a software problem and it shouldn't be made so tricky to workout what process is locking the drive - that IS a MS O/S issue, O/S design and problem determination. ...and if Win is so flaky with certified hardware maybe they should have spent more time on their certification policy so users wouldn't be caught in the middle - as if they can't sue people that false use their logos! Maybe the system could just check a hardware code and only let certifed gear connect to Windows? Maybe they should start certifying software for the same reason. They control the O/S, dictate the interfaces, certification process, direct the ecosystem, etc so it's not unreasonable to expect a "dumb" plug-n-play usb key to be released nicely by the O/S when instructed or at least have a way for the user to make the O/S force it. There's only so much blame the hardware or user responses people are willing to go along with. I think this is the straw that's convinced me it's time to make the switch to another O/S for my routine duties...

Well, I thought this was a forum for people help each other by sharing their issues and experiences even if not a direct but maybe related Microsoft issue, but it looks likes Dabur wants us to go directly to the manufacturer even if we are not sure about the root cause. I posted the original question simply because I have a certified external USB drive from one of the biggest harddrive manufacturer out there, that worked correctly with every OS I used until Windows 7. This includes Windows XP, Vista and Linux with different kernels. I've never had to install any driver for it probably because Microsoft provides their own USB, NTFS and whatever else piece of code is needed to access the drive. Now from what Dabur told us, any problem we have that is related to our hardware he is very sure that is related to the hardware. Even knowing that Microsoft is the USB and NTFS code developer, he is sure that the problem only could be in the my hardware's internal code side. I just wonder how is he that sure. As a low level software developer I know that such systems are so complex that even a very experienced developer are sometimes surprised by the tricky paths a simple algorithm can take. Also according to him its our choice to choose the OS we want. Unfortunately that is not the case for me, usually I use 3 different OS in my work and home and frequently I have to use other systems as well. By the way, I thought that the meaning of having an USB external drive was for sharing files between different computers. Dabur, I've got your point, another post is already open at the manufacturer's site, but my problem is still not solved and I am still not sure that it is my drive manufacturer's fault. So if that was your last message, good, that's your choice, at least we can go back discussing the problem and not who's fault.

It's amazing how some people (eg. Darbur) keep asking for make/model details when they could read the thread and see that the people are experiencing the same problem across a wide range of name brand drives (incl my Seagate, WD, Verbatim, Lexar, etc) with a variety of HDs (as applicable to the portable drives). Maybe we could log a problem with every manufacturer... Hopefully he has removed his alert so doesn't waste more of our time... Clearly there are lots of people with lots of different drives/USB keys with simlar problems: http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&source=hp&q=rmmetadata+problem&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=rmmetadata+problem This poor guy has had over 1000 people read his similar problem with out even one "log a hardware problem" or "Computer says No" reply - Definitely needs "hope" on that forum ;-) http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=79433.0 The problem seems related to the "Windows Transactional Resource Manager" component... http://fixunix.com/storage/385781-xp-install-txf-txflog-extend-rmmetadata.html ... possibly invoked/locked by Windows System Restore, Indexing or some similar component running in the background: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2996814.php That last link seems the most useful but none seem to have a definitive answer (tried killing off all those likely background processes a long time ago)... Might also be something useful here: http://www.mydefrag.com/forum/index.php?topic=2894.0 I'll try it the next time the problem rears it's head.

Suffering from the exact same problem (can't eject) on Windows 7 Professional x64. I'm fairly positive it is independent of the hardware, as it occurs on the following USB enclosure and hard drive configurations: IcyDock MB561S-4S IcyDock MB664US-1S Startech SATADOCK22UE Hitachi HD32000 2TB Samsung F3 HD103SJ 1 TB WD WD20EADS 2TB System: Intel DG45FC with latest drivers Besides these, I have not tested other models, so I have not seen a hardware configuration that does not suffer from this problem. Furthermore, these configurations eject without problems on my other dual-boot Debian/Mac OS X 10.4 in both operating systems. Only Windows 7 exhibits the problem. As the OP stated, LockHunter (x64 1.0 beta 3 in my case) shows locking by the System on the following paths: drive:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TextLog\$TxtLogContainer00000000000000001 drive:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TextLog\$TxtLog.bif drive:\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TextLog\$TxtLogContainer00000000000000002 Process Explorer AND Handle, both Microsoft applications show "No matching handles found." Thus I suspect it is some shadow system process running in the background (maybe Microsoft's Samba server?) that is locking the files in a way that the operating system API cannot even detect. However, the problem occurs even when I am not connected to the server from another PC.

Since this problem seems to affect all USB storage for certain configurations of Windows 7, I don't see how posting on all the hard drive manafacturers (Hitachi, Samsung, WD) would be relevant at all. I already saw some posts on the Seagate forum on this that were unanswered. Also just checked on my Windows XP Professional x86 laptop and there's no problem there. Only shows up on Windows 7. Did scans with chkdsk, gmer, RootkitRevealer, clamscan... all normal... no bad sectors or rootkits indicated. Smart values from smartmontools are fine as well. What do you mean by "linked in serial those HD or not"... do you mean serial numbers for the hard drives? (Do you suspect specific batches of all three manafacturers were defects?) Thanks, jwilcox25

why do you think even on seagate no one wants to help you ? you want to make problems , thats all , when people ask for info , you refuse to post it , when people DO want to help you you attack them , ... most people dont even bother to post or even try to help , sjee wonder why ? oh and one more thing , you should check the support of seagate , ... found the error there in less then 1 min , caused not by windows or Microsoft software by the way , ... and the apple dell was used as an example , but even that you refuse to see ,...... and then to say all you have to do is donwload some software and read the instructions that came in the box , .... pffff post all you want , i dont care about it and in the future i will go around any posts or threads you make , .... i did not even bother to answer on seagate as fasr as i am concerned this is closed for me Darbur, I thought you had already removed your alert and was not going to post here?! ;-) You clearly seem too obsessed with Microsoft to actually see logic/reason and be helpful (clearly the medal system here represents quantity over quality). The majority of posters here are quite happy for you to not post on this thread. Information has been posted here by others in response your questions, people have tried your suggestions - Clearly from your posts it is you who is not reading/comprehending. Most people don't post on forums if they don't have an answer or have something useful to add. Maybe a lesson there? In relation to you supposedly finding the solution (proof?) and choosing to not post it (immature?). If you found it in one minute why didn't you post it a long time ago? We can only assume it doesn't exist and you are making it up - esp as (for the umpteenth time) the problem exists across many major vendors products. You are not helping MS, this forum or others here in the process. jwilcox25, he wants you to create a new thread (when you are experiencing a similar problem as others here) so he can score more points for posts and so that others don't see the flow of this thread and what others have encountered/tried. He keeps asking for serial numbers (rather than model numbers, even though they have been provided) without explanation because it would appear he is clutching at straws when he doesn't have a useful answer.

Hey ausman, I agree with everything you said. Unfortunately our hope that Dabur would step out will never come true. He reacts like a kid that just got his first Windows and is very proud of it. I have worked as technical customer support for a company that deals with a huge customer base and I've never seen someone so stubborn. It is clear to me that he has no knowledge about this subject at all and he just wants to earn points by posting obvious or useless answers. Isn't any moderator looking at this? Now I really want to know who is right? Do we have the right to keep posting about our experiences and possible solutions for this problem. Or everyone should really go to another forum? If the moderator thinks I am wrong then I say sorry, I got the wrong idea and this forum is not really for me. I will come here again only when I have problems with MS high level applications such as Notepad, Calculator, etc. Or should I not? Because even these applications run on non-MS hardware. According to Dabur's logic, if my Painter is crashing, I will have to get answers from my video card manufacturer. (it is funny to use this kind of logic, isn't it?) Anyway I am too old for that bullshit :). I will not discuss with Dabur anymore, we already know what he will answer.

Here is the new topic I created as per Dabur972's suggestion http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/fde2de97-5daf-4de2-9f37-98c138bb6203 Please take a look, as it looks like the exact same problem as the one cited by many people in this thread. So far, from the responses, this specific problem seems to affect a wide range of hard drive manafacturers (Hitachi, Samsung, Seagate, WD, and various flash drive manafacturers). Since other OS's don't seem to exhibit the problem with the same drives, I would say it's a Microsoft Windows 7 problem with some specific OS configuration.

I have found this forum when searching for a solution of the discussed USB device problems. In my case I could follow the recommendations in an elder posting elsewhere (see http://allthingsmarked.com/2006/09/11/howto-safely-eject-hardware-if-windows-doesnt-let-you/). The basic steps that solved my problem are: use Sysinternals Process Explorer, menu Find / Find handle or dll, enter e.g. "E:" (if "E" is your USB drive letter) close or kill all processes, that are displayed in my case it was the explorer process, i.e. the desktop application, that has no explicit application window to close. Therefore I had to kill it with Process Explorer. Of course I got rid of my taskbar, but via Process Explorer, menu File / Run "Explorer" I created a new explorer which immediately recreates the task bar following these steps I finally could get rid of my USB ejection problems My OS is MS Windows XP. I regularly have USB eject problems with several USB brands (iomega, sandisk, trekstor). Now having spent some hours on this problem, I could reproduce the problem by simply inserting an USB device, opening an jpeg image on it with MS office picture manager, after having closed the picture manager again I cannot safely remove the USB device until I have killed the explorer desktop application. The described steps seem to solve at least some of the discussed problems.

System Internals Process Explorer didn't show any process using my USB drive letter. Only using LockHunter I was able to see that Windows' System process was the one that was locking my drive and since it is a low level process it cannot be killed safely.

Though this will not solve all locking problems mentioned in this thread it should be able to solve the locks concerning the \$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxtLog\$TxfLog files . Stop the Distributed Link Tracking Client in the windows Services. The service service shows as a svchost.exe processes in task manager. Those locks should be gone now. Remove the USB stock safely and restart the service if you think you need it. You could check blackviper.com to see what it does exactly. I believe its not really needed in most circumstances ie for home users though the default is it's started after boot. Other USB locking problems concern can come from having started Windows Search in the windows Services. Stop it and see if it helps. Unfortunately still other locks can be possible..i'm experiencing one right now where both process explorer and USB Safely Remove / LockHunter (same company) show absolutely nothing, not even a handle. And sometimes the System process has a handle on the USB drive one would like to safely remove...I haven't found a solution for that situation yet either (the System process can't nor should be killed) ;-( A workaround for some of the locking problems could be to make sure the policies tab of the properties of the usb stick or drive in device manager is set to optimize for quick removal contrary to optimize for performance (with sometimes even more additional cache settings having been enabled). BTW I have seen these lock problems in all Windows versions so far and I found them extremely annoying...I mean whats the point of having an USB drive if you can't safely remove the damn thing while you closed all processes / tasks possible already.

I have this problem with all my drives every time almost. Only in Windows 7. I have a two PNY stinks (thought one is really old), a toshiba stick and a Simple Tech external HD. My MB is Amd/Ati not Nvidia. Had all of these drives except the newer PNY when I was using xp and I only ever had XP say this when there was high a level application running and accessing the drive. None of them have any backup software or anything. If it was a proble with hardware: a) Tons of people's hardware is brakes when hooked to a computer running windows 7 (or evidently for some people older version of windows too) and then it miraculously fixes itself whenever they hook it to another computer. Or b) (in a more likely sinario) lots of hardware from like all manufactures doesn't exactly adhere to some standard but windows only has issues with this sometimes and other OS's don't care at all, which means essentially that it comes back to a windows issue, not ignoring or accounting for something everyone else does, or only doing so some of the time. Thoughts: a) God hates windows ;-) b) Not hard to believe as it is a very Microsoft thing to do. Now someone who has been posting here might say that by acknowledging that this might be a hardware issue I'm saying that I shouldn't say it is a Microsoft issue and should go complain to every hardware manufacturer out there for not following some standard (that might be outdated or incomplete) to the exact letter. However if there is a "hardware issue" with every hardware, and other OS's adapted to that issue, it is essentially not an issue anymore, and Microsoft is the odd man out for sticking to an outdated standard. (I'm not saying this makes the hardware issues necessarily ok but just because something has some little issue that is easy to work around doesn't mean you should just clobber it) It's like if someone made a web browser that only follows the exact html specifications. It wouldn't be able to display most the pages on the internet because most of them don't follow the html guide lines to the letter (not closing tags, interlaced elements instead of nested ones, etc). Microsoft seems to insist that everyone who doesn't do something their way or the way they think it should be done is just wrong and should be ignored, bashed, clobbered, etc. Meanwhile everyone else might not agree with each other all the time but they still accept each other. Mac's can run linux programs and although Mac don't want it to linux can run mac programs. Gnome can run KDE programs, and visa verse. Linux can run windows programs, use windows file systems, open windows files, etc. Meanwhile Windows can't even open a plain text file from a Linux system properly (without special software). In Short: Even if it is a hardware issue doesn't mean it isn't also a Windows issue, because windows isn't accounting for such a common hardware issue that other OS's are. Which most of the posts I've read say it is an issue NEW with Windows 7 so it is something that changed somewhere between 7 and Vista or XP which for lots of us wasn't the hardware. Note to someone: I read everything first so don't say I didn't and I'm not going to go to every hardware manufacturer in the know universe to report an "issue" with their hardware when it is only an issue for one version of one OS (aka an issue of that OS). Hardware manufacturers usually laugh at you if you tell them their hardware isn't working in linux so why should they bend over for Microsoft? Esp when the hardware in question doesn't need drivers (which is normally the only reason hardware that isn't physically broken won't work).

Oh and btw what in the world kind of "hardware issue" would make windows think something is in use when it is window's job to monitor the usage?! The hardware has nothing to do with the in use locking of a drive. Usage monitoring is an OS function. A drive reads what the OS tells it to and writes what the OS tells it too (with maybe a few other things like getting info about the device). It might tell windows it is busy if it is busy but then you wouldn't be able to read and write as well as not being able to eject it, which isn't the case (unless you also have that issue that windows randomly makes removable drives read only like i did) Speaking of which could this maybe be related to the read only bug too? Maybe there is an issue with the entire file system management system of removable drives.

Though this will not solve all locking problems mentioned in this thread it should be able to solve the locks concerning the \$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxtLog\$TxfLog files . Stop the Distributed Link Tracking Client in the windows Services. I was occasionally affected by this issue in 64-bit Windows 7. I have not encountered this problem since stopping the Distributed Link Tracking Client. LockHunter still shows the \$RmMetadata\ files as open, but this does not prevent the safe removal of the drive.

hi , after doing some test i found a few culprits regarding the metadata 1 a virus or trojan or rootkit 2 system restore or back up third party software 3 problems with formatting software cbrchrt what do you use for back up or other software ?? acronis older version gave problems with metadata , newer versions dont some format software can leave traces behind that want to synchro all the time or looking for folders and sectors some cases of not being able to dicon have to do with the drives settings and how its used if you have itunes and some older sony software on your comp or if you used to rip and copy movies and music there is a good chance you have a rootkit that is working , it can be installed so deep that regular AV and AM cant find it , .... its a given that cheaper drives have more problems , the ones above or around 100 - 150 USD and above seem to have less problems NOTE that if readyboost is used it will work with prefetch , what does that mean for the regular user ? >> if you load docs and pics a lot from USB dev. prefetch learns and takes note of it , it will preload some settings and creating a connection with the USB device , .... some software that is included with mobile phones and cameras have this installed on the comp , so when you hook up your phone or cam windows is tasked to maintain the connection , some work in the following way , you take a USB stick with pics or a mem card , the pics are loaded to the comp and waiting to be deleted on the USB stick or mem card , this creates a constant connection with your USB device .make sure you have always the last version of USB connection drivers installed , some comp with build in cardreaders and usb ports have a permanent link with them , i found a few like that this week , its like a program installed by the OEM that constantly checks to see if the ports are activated , ... > that one was hard to find (!!) i hope ts a bit of use for some take a look at sysinternals forums also have a nice weekend Scan with OneCare + 50 Windows 7even Tips + Plagued by the Privacy Center? This kind of "support" will lead to the final downfall of windows.... Microsoft's answer to tons of peoples problems is "Its not us" when the same issue is less prevalent, quickly fixed, or just absent in other OS's. Im getting the message from this that I should just go back to xp and tell people who ask me not to upgrade. I told one friend to upgrade to 7 when he got a new computer and now he has this issue too. Its a brand new computer and it has this issue. My computer is brand new and has this issue. "1 a virus or trojan or rootkit "? So windows 7 is WAAAAY more suseptable to these? I've NEVER had one before i switched to 7. I acutally got my first virus ever when i was trying the beta.... So much for "increased security". I've used external drives to save people documents when their computers where overun by viruses and not had this issue (this was in vista and xp). So evidently if viruses can do this now without any other signs there are MORE holes in 7 than previous versions. Windows 7 issue. "2 system restore or back up third party software"? Don't have any. Removable drives where formatted first thing when i got them. some of them where format by windows 7 and still have this issue. Anything running backup wise is part of windows and is on by default as i didn't turn any such feature on. Windows 7 issue. "3 problems with formatting software"? If I am using a format that windows can read for a drive I use windows to format it instead of formating it in linux and I don't use third party formating software in windows. Even then I used linux foramted drives in XP that where in Ext format and they didn't have any issues and you needed third party software to read them let alone format them. Windows 7 Issue PS if someone could post a link to the software people are using to track the locks I would love to poke at those files with linux.

i have searched the topic of "drive is in use, cannot stop now....", "how to force usb dismount ....", etc, etc, etc, for the PAST 18 months !!!There IS no solution to this, as far as I am concerned. EVERY USB drive that I own (12 of them) and every USB stick (10 0f them), on EVERY machine that I own (5 of them), INTERMITTENTLY either WILL or WILL not dismount. There IS NO rhyme or reason to it.Bioggest problem is that there is no way to flush the $MFT index file on an NTFS disk, and that might get corrupted. If I am NOT albe to dismount, I have to SHUT DOWN system, instead of HIBERNATE (hibernate allows faster recovery for me).I have INDEXING off, some of the ANTIVIRUS off for those drives, etc, etc, etc.Tonight, I AGAIN did a search, found this thread, and again unfortunately, no solution is found. Guess I'll search in another 3 months.nick

Tonight, I AGAIN did a search, found this thread, and again unfortunately, no solution is found. Guess I'll search in another 3 months. nick Yes, but until Microsoft recognise the inherrent design problem/bug here and actually release a fix for it you will likely be reading the same random rubbish from Dabur972. Pity his paying customers at MS. Jwilcox, we told you would waste you time following his advice to create a new thread didn't we ;-) Anyway I hope this provides some entertaining reading for the MS engineers on their breaks at least ;-) Thanks StefHF, Chris D and Sigil for your intelligent comments/suggestions for users who haven't given up hope yet. While I now spend much of my time using Linux for productivity reasons I've disabled the "Distributed Link Tracking Client" Service on my test/games machines and see if it makes the occurance less likely. Reading up on the service eg. http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/Services/Distributed_Link_Tracking_Client.htm, it really makes you wonder what design logic would have this service running by default for the rare scenario it would be needed (esp for home users) rather than detecting if a local network/domain is going to be used and then starting the service... It makes me feel half the inefficient default MS services are not really required for most home users and waste resources at the very least...

Tonight, I AGAIN did a search, found this thread, and again unfortunately, no solution is found. Guess I'll search in another 3 months.nick Yes, but until Microsoft recognise the inherrent design problem/bug here and actually release a fix for it you will likely be reading the same random rubbish from Dabur972. While I now spend much of my time using Linux for productivity reasons I've disabled the "Distributed Link Tracking Client" Service on my test/games machines and see if it makes the occurance less likely.Reading up on the service eg. http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/Services/Distributed_Link_Tracking_Client.htm, it really makes you wonder what design logic would have this service running by default for the rare scenario it would be needed (esp for home users) rather than detecting if a local network/domain is going to be used and then starting the service... It makes me feel half the inefficient default MS services are not really required for most home users and waste resources at the very least... at least i try , ... and what did you do ?Scan with OneCare + 50 Windows 7even Tips + Plagued by the Privacy Center? I too am having this problem now. I have a brand new self-built PC running Win7 64-bit. I have a 250GB My Passport (WD2500ME), and it is appearing as a standard hard drive (not removable storage), and it's reporting the model number of the actual drive inside the shell (WD2500BEVS, which is a 2.5 Scorpio) !!! Cannot remove the drive w/out just being ineligant and unplugging it hot. System: Intel i3-530, Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H mobo, G. Skill 2x2GB, WD Caviar Black 500GB internal SATA II. Bill

hey fruitcake none forces you to read or post in this thread , ... its you who act like a fool , .... at least i have tried , what have you done ? >> zip nada , just picking a fight , is that all you can do ? i spend over 200 hours trying to see what and how , ..... so buzz of 200 hours! lol. Are you putting this on your timesheets at Microsoft? Read your own comments - Your response is more suited to yourself than anyone else here. You responded to others in this thread saying you wouldn't post here anymore (we wish!) and told others off saying you know why this problem occurs and weren't going to tell us (lol)! You continue to prove you're a liar and are childish. While it doesn't look like MS is going to solve this problem anytime soon, at least you are providing us with some laughs with each additional post you make. PS. Just a suggestion: You'd be better off spending your time improving your english/grammar skills than trying (and failing) to boost your ego here with the adults.

hi , and have you contacted Microsoft support ?? have a nice day Funny one would guess that Microsoft's developers would read the official Microsoft developer forum, but I guess I could go add one to the billions of support tickets they probably get instead of taking part in an actual discussion... I tried disabling the Distr ibuted Link Tracking service like someone else sugested and so far it seems to have stopped the issue. Seems like a fairly unnessessary service from what I read. I can't think of many instances where a shortcut would be pointing at something that you would move very often unless you where an advanced user in which case you would know how to fix the shortcut.... I moved my My Documents folder to a different partition after disabling it and nothing broke. It seems like excessive stupidity proofing esp when it's trying to work on removable drives which would probably cause a lot of unnessessary traking of files that are on a file system that is only there for some of the time. They might be changed on a different computer anyway, therefore destroying the use in doing so in the first place.

Not a fix that we need but a work-around is within disk managment to set offending drive as "offline", then "eject" works fine.

I wonder is there is some software on the stick that is causing the problem. I know that SanDisk uses such software to emulate a CD. The Kingston stick has no software. If no other software is useing usb connected flash or external hard drives then it is logical that windows own internal processes are the culprit. Useing disk management is the tool provided to turn off such devices. Once set to be "Offline" they can be removed with the normal eject process.

I ran into this issue briefly running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with a SimpleTech Simple drive (nice name, eh?). I checked the Disk I/O in the Resource Monitor (go to the task manager, click on the performance tab, then click the Resource Monitor button) and noted under the "Image" column that the system process was what was performing the I/O tasks with the $LogFile and $MFT files. There were no other files on that drive listed in the Disk I/O queue. Under normal operation when I plug this drive in, explorer.exe will take a quick run through the drive to get the folder structure (prefetching I think) and these files will also be in use by the system process but will be let go again after a minute or so. However, when this issue occurs, the system process isn't letting go of those files. I don't know why, maybe it's going through a disk checking routine or ran into an infinite loop somewhere. I've noticed that it only seems to happen after the drive has been plugged in for a while, as has been previously stated. The only workaround I've found isn't much of a workaround since it's to make sure I don't have any other file I/O with the drive to avoid loosing data, then yank the cable. The drive will work in a linux system later without forcing a mount as long as you plug it back into the windows system after yanking and eject it properly first.

I have exactly the same situation happening with my Dell M4400 w\Windows 7 x64 using a Verbatim 2.5" (non powered) 250GB portable hard drive. I have completed formated and reinstalled Windows 7 x64 two times (Once with a Dell OEM version and once with a Retail version) results are identical with both versions. The only thing that I can say is that with the first situation I did not investigate thoroughly and can't confirm a triger so to speak. The second time I had installed iTunes 9.3 for Windows (64-bit installer) and had started iTunes and was in the process of updating iTunes library with my music files on my Verbatim portable hard drive (approx. 400 songs) and somewhere after all the songs had been transferred and updated the portable hard drive seemed to get hung or extremely busy for 10 minutes or more. It was at this point that I tried to "Safely Remove Hardware" and was unable to do so for at least 30 minutes. It was then that I discovered the exact same 3 files mentioned above as being the ones that were tying up my portable hard drive. I've been told it was a virus (ESET and Housecall found nothing), was told it was being "defrageed" and "it was being indexed"

Hey there. I've had this issue with windows since Windows XP and today I decided too look for solution to it, after reading most of this post I'm surprised by two things: 1 - How can it be possible for anyone to deny that this bug exits ?. This has been a common thing in my life since Windows XP, and I have had quite a few computers since Windows XP (Different MB chipsets and different CPU), so no, hardware is not the issue. 2 - How can it be possible for this bug to still exist with no solution to it ?. I run windows 7 x64 now on a D975XBX2 intel motherboard with 8GB of corsair RAM and a Core 2 Quad CPU. Also I have a WD MyPassport usb disk which from time to time presents this problem. There is no software from WD running here since the first thing I did was format the entire disk and left no trace of it. Also ReadyBoost is not enabled on the drive and the removal policy is set to "Quick Removal". According to Resource Monitor, exactly when I try to eject my disk, I get this "System" process which tries to access: - H:\$Mft - H:\$LogFile and possibly other H:\$<something> which gets released almost immediately. I've had ubuntu for work on this PC (Windows is for gaming) since I bought it and never had this issue. ____ I even played around with an unsupported version of OSX and never had this issue. So is this getting fixed anytime soon or is this going to be another of those "Windows can not do ..." thing ?

Hi, Checked everything in this forum and others, nothing has worked so far. Have cheapie HDD Media Player - MUST be safely removed otherwise cannot play on TV and must be reformatted which is quite a pain for a 2.5" 500GB drive... drive has removed fine in the past, with problems reboot worked. Well its not now. Cannot safely remove, tried "offline"-ing the drive in Comp Mgmt, doesnt work. was already set to quick removal, fat laugh. doesnt work. same processes u talking about locking the drive, got new process explorer, find handles, M: (the drive) 93 processes open!!!!! WTF Kill processes with unlocker just come back. killed explorer, also comes back. killed distributed service, disabled, still comes back. need to reboot now after all changes i made, maybe something will work. Thank god don't pay for windows anymore after losing my XP sticker in 2004 and being told by MS support that having the disc doesn't matter please buy another copy of Windows. Well just LOL.

This kind of shoot-from-the-hip, first level support, ridiculous response makes me want to puke. It is the epitome the brain-damaged mentality Windows is built upon. I am researching this problem for XP--glad to know it's still a huge hassle in Kludge 7. You so-called decorated Generals of the forum shouldn't even bother to respond--WTF does it matter what brand of mainboard or USB stick it is? Why don't you answer the very simple, eloquently stated question: "Clearly a program/process is creating the ... RmMetadata files and locking them preventing the O/S from releasing the drive - [Can you tell me] which one?" I've heard better thought-out responses at Best Buy. Regards, The Pump Some USB sticks, stuch as Sandisk have software on them. My original post was deleted by the moderators, but thankfully it lives on in the quote. Why do these BFs (insert your own acronym) come through and delete realistic, if scalding, criticism rather than engage the engineers who can provide a decent answer and report it? Don't we deserve a decent response? Aren't we trying hard to use a half-baked kludge (aka Windows) to the best of its ability and seeking an answer to a simple question? Fred, it's not the stick, or any software on it. Gomer, it's not the motherboard or its drivers. Elmer, it's not a BIOS setting. Or maybe it is. The point is, WHY THE FLICK CAN'T I FIND OUT? Even with all the add-on software that makes Kludge XP or Kludge 7 a decent operating system, no one can figure out why we can't "safely remove hardware" because the OS has a lock on it that won't let go. To the dipshit moderator: Call engineering; find out WTF is going on, and report back. Simple. Do your FLICKING job. If that isn't about providing answers, please quit. You're not doing anyone any favors here by being silent. Please tell me to FO and use a different operating system. Don't worry, I already have. Have the balls to leave this post here. In my posting account, I just waded through about 20 bullshit responses to this thread, without boots, and all that was offered was more misinformed guesses that only wastes time and creates confusion. We need some informed, enlightened advice from people who actually know what they're talking about. I don't mean to denigrate any of you people who are trying to help out here (judgement reserved for you ani with the badges). Thank you for trying to help. Open help and Open Source are the way to go.

I found this forum while experiencing the same issue with a WD 'My Passport' external HD on my (Core i7, 6GB RAM, etc) Win7 x64 machine. Since I first installed it, I also have noticed how items inside the recycle bin never show up. Neither I have been able to turn off 'auto arrange', as well as 'numerical sorting' in windows explorer. But wait, that's not all. Whenever I try to play some mp3, windows media player greets me with an 'server execution failed' pop up. As I type, more known 'features not bugs' continue coming to mind. Seems to me the guys at Redmond simply have lost their edge. I wish I could be more optimistic and expect some of these issues to be solved in SP1, since in its current state Windows 7 seems more like a bad joke than an operating system. But then Dabur972's words come to mind: "Microsoft is not responsible". As if I didn't already know.

In an effort to fix the problems I mentioned in my last post (and more issues have come up since then) I've tried MS support several times. It has never been of help. What I'm doing is, I'm waiting for Service Pack 1 to see if it solves at least the most relevant issues. If it does not, I'm definitely going back to XP+SP3, even though I'd be losing some funcionality (multi core support, reported RAM capacity, bluray/tuner support, etc). We just need to be aware of MS current market tactics. As soon as they finally get a product right, they dump all support for it in favor of an unfinished one, like Windows 7. These are the main reasons why as a long time customer I feel I couldn't care less for support. Windows 7 = more features = more problems

SP1 is coming, its still being finished off with a few tests before being formally made a beta. For my A560 I simply use the Windows image tool to import pics. I can also use Live Essentials but I just use the Windows tool as it is adequate. Live Photo can clean up pics, but I also have other programs as well. I never have liked the Canon software as its old and other programs are better. No problems with detaching the camera its works fine. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe I also am a true vegan and I am very good with economics and I used to play chess at 2400++

I couldn't contact to NEC :( I try different mail services. And different my messages even very short, but I got as example: Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 554 554 5.7.1 SPAM is not accepted here.SA score= 10.353 (state 18). Another e-mail service: necsupgb@nec-computers.com SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data: host gateway.nec-computers.com [84.37.114.241]: 554 5.7.1 SPAM is not accepted here.SA score= 8.007 How they can setup Anti-SPAM on support e-mails. Is this adequate policy of NEC ?!! I am shocked! PS Moderator: I'm sorry for my indirect theme message.

I've had this lockup problem with a rom drive. Even ejecting the disk didn't remove the lock. Not to mention just about every other USB plugin mentioned here. The machine I'm have the big issue with is running Vista, but my old Win2K machine also locks removable drives (rarely). At least I found Unlocker which lets me delete files I created on the Vista internal HD (not USB) without rebooting.

I am a MS Certified Systems Admin. I use my Hitachi 40GB HD to store software tools to remove every type of trash you can imagine. I have 2 Dell 4700 desktops sitting side by side with Dell default drivers for everything and I was having this problem on only one of them. I found that Spybot S&D on my portable drive had a .dll that was being locked by explorer.exe. I was able to use 'WhoLockMe' to close the explorer hook but this took another step I wanted to avoid. I found that by going into Disk Management and changing the drive letter for this portable drive the problem went away after the next reboot of the PC. It should be noted that in this case Spybot S&D was installed on the problem computer and NOT installed on the other one. Try changing the drive letter, your milage may vary but it can't hurt anything either. RegardsEarth 1st! We'll mine the other planets later.

I had this same problem and it was solved by removing the HomeGroupUser$ account. Run lusrmgr from a cmd prompt, go into the users folder, right click on the HomeGroupUser$ account and delete it. That fixed it for me.

Hi friends, My name is ashok. I have seagate portable hard drive of 500 GB. I had been also not able to safely remove my hard drive from Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. It was showing message some program is using this rive you can't remove. Then I was searching on internet to how can I solve this problem then i came to this forum and i read this thread but its very long t read it. Then I downloaded "Lockhunter' program to see what process is locking my seagate portable drive. I found there is a service called "Crypserv.exe" that service was running and associated with my seagate harddrive due to this service I was not able to safely remove my hard drive. Then I killed this process "Crypserv.exe" by "process expolrer" then I able to remove my harddrive safely. Do not delete this file from your pc i think this is trusted file read this http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/crypserv/21142/ this is cryptography service.

just ran into this with an Akasa external USB/eSATA enclosure. first of all i'd like to commend The Pump for telling it like it is. it takes serious work to give so many bs answers by staff as this thread has seen. so apparently the OP problem (and mine, and others' posting here) is about windows not figuring out what is a fixed disk and what is a removable disk. my external casing doesnt have a driver to tell windows what to do and whatever is built in doesn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed. had the exact same output from lockhunter, too. googling around i found http://superuser.com/questions/248639/how-to-mount-a-usb-thumb-drive-as-fixed-instead-of-removable which found http://www.getusb.info/flip-your-bit-usb-utility-to-make-local-drive/ BootIt is a Lexar based utility to flip the Removable Media Bit setting of a USB drive. What this means, is you can take a Lexar drive (and many other brands) and make it appear as a Local Drive on your PC rather than Removable Storage. it seems this little util can flip the bit the other way as well. wfm, running w7hp x64. selecting eject from the tray usb icon now ejects my 3.5" sata drive in the usb enclosure no further questions asked.

I have a similar problem - can't eject USB external hard drive, but can't figure out why. After looking at this thread, my conclusion is that the only reasonable course of action is to just yank the USB cable and hope for the best! All this crap about service packs and drivers is missing the point. Somewhere in the OS there's something that thinks that some process is holding onto the disk, but there's apparantly no way to figure out which process it thinks is holding onto the disk. That's the problem, isn't it? Is there no way around that? If I had a problem like this on Linux, I wouldn't be too annoyed, after all, it's free. But when I have the problem on something I paid for and that's supposed to be supported (i.e. Windows), I expect the vendor (Microsoft) to fix it. Come on guys!

I've found that 9 out of 10 times when I receive that message it is because I opened a file browser/explorer to search through the USB drive then closed it while I was still accessing the drive. This WILL hold the drive active until you open the file browser/explorer and back it out of that drive and or browse to another drive.

I realized that the problem always occurs when I start themachine with the external HD connected. I have an external hard drive 500gb Samsung S2. This topic has already 2 years and no definitive solution has not come ...

Guys did you try the Lexar BootIt-based solution I wrote about on Thursday, March 31, 2011? If it works for you, vote the post up! Unfortunately this "fabulous" handrolled forum software doesn't even let you directly link to posts. That's what happens when the developers probably aren't much of forums users themselves.. Oh, and you just HAVE to love the Microsoft forum URLs. I can only suggest appending some random SHA512 hashes in there too just for good measure.

Having the same problem. My (emplyer provided) usb drive is a Kangaru (no really..) Hooked into the usb port on a dell 2408 monitor. system is an optiplex 740. Anyhoo.. just wanted to share that when i ejected from the Computer Management-storage-disk management console instead of the system tray or Computer explorer window. it worked. Will try this again to make sure it wasnt coincidence (as I've been clicking and killing processes, etc...)

if there is a problem, check on the drive properties and make the write cache is disabled so that when its idle you can yank it fine I have been noticing a growing number of USB issues of late My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee. Hello Everyone. The solution to this is more simple than you may think. This happens when The drive is set to Quick Removal and there's no need to eject before unplugging it. Good Luck!
