Cannot install Windows 8.1 on a domain computer
How come I can't install Windows 8.1 from Windows store when my laptop is joined to the domain? I can install it when I take it out of the domain. We have NO Group Policy on installing OS or Apps and we don't have proxy server. What could be the issue?

What type of license are you using?

Is it cooperation license or home license or OEM?

In Enterprise deploy of Windows 8.1 done by IT department and that's could be reason that it block when you connect to domain.

The OS comes pre-installed with new laptop purchase so I guess it's OEM but we also have our site licenses to upgrade any computers.  I'm not doing Enterprise deployment yet.  I'm just trying to upgrade an individual laptop from Windows 8 to 8.1.  The computer is already joined to the domain. It will download and start to install but then stop saying "This app wasn't installed--view details" But when I take the laptop off the domain, login with a local account.  I can finish the installation.

Hi,

According to your description, your Windows 8 already upgraded to Windows 8.1, is that right? In my opinion, your problem probably caused by domain controller, you can try to contact domain administrator to confirm this thing.

In addition, may be we can try to find the error log but I'm not sure we can find it as your system already upgraded. CBS log wich located at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS may record this error message, you can check C drive to find Windows.old file, all the file of Windows folder in privours system are compress in it.

Retrieve files from the Windows.old folder:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-files-upgrade-windows-old

No, it's not all upgraded.  I was testing on one computer only and that's how I found out.  We have hundreds of computers to be upgraded but if Windows is not meant for Enterprise then I'll just skip the idea and stay on Windows 7.  But I want to make sure if that's the case before I make the announcement to senior management.  By the way, I'm the domain administrator.

I was able to get the CBS log on the second laptop that I was going to upgrade but unable because I refused to take it off the domain.  There's got to be a way to workaround this.

The log seems big.  I don't see a way to attach it here.  Do you want me to just post it?

The log is too big it won't allow me to post it here.  What part of the log do you want to look at?
