Cannot make outgoing network connections from windows 7 64 bit
I have the identical problem that Ian D. Thompson had in his post with same title, Monday, December 28, 2009 10:51 PM: "My xp computer can access file shares on my windows 7 computer, but my windows 7 computer can't even ping my xp computer, any connection attempt times out and I never see my xp computer in the network...my windows 7 computer connects fine to my router and I have no problems using the internet through the router." The XP computer is also able to access the internet wirelessly. Downloading the LLTD package failed with me, too, as it did with Ian. The thread ended with darylmackay's suggestion to upgrade his Bonjour software. I also tried this to no avail. I also uninstalled it with no success. When I upgraded, the only thing available to download that I could see now is a Bonjour Print Services software package. I'm wondering whether this problem maight have started after I installed Win 7 Service pack 1. I certainly did not have the problem for the past year or more, i.e., Win 7 could access my XP laptop's files with no problem until the past few weeks or so. My wireless router is a Trendnet modem/router. I troubleshot with them over the phone for an hour or two, and we finally decided it was not a router problem, but rather Windows 7. Any new insight into this?????

Hi, Pleaser refer to the following steps to check the issue. 1. Disable both firewalls on Windows XP and Windows 7. 2. Turn on NetBIOS over TCP/IP on Windows 7. 3. Try to access Windows XP via IP address. If you recieve any error message, please post it back. 4. Check relevant policies about shared folder on Windows XP. Hope these help. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I disabled the firewalls. Then, on Windows 7, right clicked my network connection> network>Properties>Networking>TCP?IPv4>Properties>Advanced>WINS tab>clicked Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Then I tried to access the XP laptop via Start button>Run window, and also on address window of internet browser. But no success. Now I can't ping from 7 to XP or from XP to 7. I had been able at least to ping from XP to 7. I got no error code, only a "Connection has timed out"

Both computers are in the same workgroup, but where do you specify the subnet?

The firewall should be disabled during the test. If you can ping them, please try to use IP address to directly access shared folder. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I clean-booted both computers, and they can both ping each other now. Each computer can also see/share the other computer's files now. We're making progress! I assume the problem will recur once I do a normal boot. Should I try that now? I just did a normal reboot of the XP laptop. The result was that the XP can still see the the Win 7's files, but the Win 7 can't see the XP's files. Now, I re-did clean boot on the XP. Win 7 still can't see XP files, and XP can no longer see Win 7 files!?! They are both able to ping each other successfully though. Confusing.

Hi, Check the shared files setting on Windows XP again. Whether you receive any error message when you try to use IP address to access Windows 7 or Windows XP? Please post the information here. It seems that some applications block the shared files connection. Also, you may try to disable SMBv2 for a test. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980044Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I rechecked the file sharing. It's still in sharing mode. I don't get an error code when I try to access either computer via its IP address. I just get an "Unable to Connect" notification. I did the workaround for the SMBv2 in regedit. It didn't change anything. The only thing I can think of is to keep clean rebooting and successively change which services I disable till I narrow down the offending service.

Hi, Yep, It seems that this should be caused by 3rd party software. Maybe the software blocked the connection. Please follow the Clean Boot article to find out it.
