Cannot ping or communicate with Windows 7 machine.
Hi, I am unable to initiate any sort of remote connection one of the Windows 7 machines on my network. Everything else on the box is working fine. I only noticed the issue when someone attempted to use TFTP from a Cisco device onto the box. After seeing that we could not use TFTP we tried pinging the laptop. When attempting to ping the laptop the IP address of the device resolves correctly but I get a 'Request timed out' message coming back. I also cannot access administrative shares on the laptop or seemingly any other remote connection, Remote Desktop, VNC etc. I can ping out from the laptop fine but it seems that certain incoming connections are being blocked for some reason. The OS is Windows 7 Professional and we are in a Server 2008 domain network. Windows Firewall is disabled through group policy. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks Rob

Check the Router / Server setup. There are firewalls and rules on there that can stop the Connection.

What security software suite is running if any? It may be that the server blocked the TFTP communication and made a rule to block future connections.John Wiley

Thanks for that. We use Sophos Endpoint Security on all our laptops/desktops. The strange thing is no one else is experiencing the problem. I have been told in the past that although Windows firewall can be switched off it is best to leave it on but setting it to allow everything through. This is because certain connections are flatly refused by W7 unless the Firewall approves them. I've tried this but it hasn't resolved the issue. I'll investigate further any changes that have been made on the Sophos server. Thanks Rob
