Cannot print after update to 8.1 : Printers gone : Print spooler keeps stopping : Cannot add printers
Hello, Microsoft?
Any updates or real answers to this issue.
My spooler won't stay running, I can't add printers.
Tell me something I haven't already tried!
Tried right click the one printer that appears and click troubleshoot. It finds nothing.
Tried printer diagnostics, it tells me the spooler isn't running (duh) and starts it and thinks that it has solved the problem, it didn't.
Set spooler to restart on all failures, which it does but that doesn't help.
With spooler running I get RPC Call failure message when I try to add a printer.
With spooler not running/failed I get Endpoint Mapper error (duh).
I don't know about you but It's kind of important that I can print things.
Since we can't roll-back or do a restore (thanks a bunch) and I don't want to have to refresh and re-install the 142 Programs (not store apps) that I have, I need a resolution NOW!
Dell Latitude E6520 was running Win 7, did update to Win 8 last year, then 8.1 a few days ago.
On a Domain. Was working fine until update to 8.1. No errors while installing update.

Really!
Because yes, we use CSA, UT, FC.
So did you resolve the issue?
Uninstall?
Reinstall?
October 25th, 2013 5:41pm
Hi,
According to your description, its probably the driver problem caused this problem.
Firstly, you can try to reinstall Printer Driver to resolve this problem, if no use, please contact the printer manufacture to verify the printer compatibility with Windows 8.1.
Secondly, about the problem with spooler service, please try the steps below to resolve it for test.
1. Click WIN+Q, type "Services.msc" in the open box and click OK.
2. Double-click "Printer Spooler" in the Services list.
3. Click Stop and click OK.
4. Click the Start Button, type "%WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers" in the open window, and delete all files in this folder.
5. Click the Start Button, click Run, type "Services" (without the quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.
6. Double-click "Printer Spooler" in the Services list.
If any error is received, please let me know in details.
Thirdly, I noticed that you also encountered a PRC services problem, I would like to suggest you refer to the link below for the solution.

This a Print Processor
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRTPROCS\x64\csintprt.dll
Have you attempted removing this software?
October 30th, 2013 12:35am
Have this same exact issue. Did you get yours fixed??
Everything ran fine with Windows 8 and now all the printers have disappeared. Microsoft has been working on this all day and keep saying it is the drivers, but nothing still works.
No printers, no CSA, UT, FileCabinet, No NitroPDFs, nothing!! it is ridiculous.
October 31st, 2013 11:26pm
If this is the exact issue then you have CSA installed since the spooler is failing when
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRTPROCS\x64\csintprt.dll
corrupts the process memory.
If this is a different issue with the same result , spooler terminates, please check your system event log for the Faulting Module name.

Well, I'm not a computer genius, but I did find the Microsoft Compatibility pages. Guess what. Windows 8.1 is not completely compatible or is incompatible with most mid-priced jet all-in-one printers and many other printers by Microsoft's admission. Perhaps
this has to do with 3D printing? Whatever the reason, this will send home PC users screaming to Apple in greater numbers. My advice to Microsoft: Patches Now!

Both my HP printers will not work now on the 8.1 update tried new drivers taken printers out put them back, still no print, both are wireless
this is message I get
This error can appear if a default printer has not been designated or if the
application is unable to locate an existing default printer. To correct this
problem, try one of the following in Microsoft Windows:
- If a printer or printer settings is not available after you click the File tab, and then click
Print, add a
printer. - If the application cannot find an existing printer that is already
installed, set the printer as the default printer. - If a default printer is installed but the application is unable to use it,
uninstall the printer driver, and then install the latest version of the printer
driver. - If the printer is on a print server, make sure the printer is available, the
network is functioning, the server is not stalled, the printer is not out of
paper, or the printer is not suspended by the administrator. Printing issues
associated with a network printer are best handled by your local network
administrator.

I had the same issue after upgrading to 8.1
All I did was start the Remote Procedure Call service which had stopped (and is set to manual start).
Check your print spooler service properties and it shows you which other services the spooler depends on. Ensure they are all running.
November 5th, 2013 5:40pm
I had this same issue. I found reference to it in another forum and they found that the Print Spooler was not starting automatically due to an issue with Kaspersky security software. Apparently this is also the case with Zone Alarm, which I believe
uses the same anti virus engine. Here is what worked for me:
Downloaded the Kaspersky removal tool from their website. Rebooted into Safe Mode. Ran the uninstall tool. Rebooted into Normal Mode. Then I rebooted again into Normal Mode (it seems to require two reboots) Now the Print Spooler starts
normally and printing works fine. I then installed MS Security Essentials and no problems.
By the way, Kaspersky denies they are the cause (I tried their online chat)
Hope this works for you, it did for me

printers do not work after 8.1 upgrade:
Epson 8300
Canon PIXMA MG2400
same problem at both: I see the printers in the "Devices and Printers" page, but when printing, I get the error message "bi-directional support is not enabled".
I try to enable this in the port settings, but the tick mark disappears after "OK"; next time I look at this port dialog window, bi-directional is again disabled.

This is funny - since when does Windows have to be compatible to printer drivers? I always thought it is the other way round... drivers should be compatible to Wi
November 18th, 2013 10:02pm
Here is what worked for me:
1. Open Regedit as Administrator
2. Find the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\ key.
3. If you are on a 64-Bit machine, browse to the "Windows x64" sub-key (else "Windows NT x86")
4. Under the "Print Processors" sub-key DELETE ALL THE SUB-KEYS EXCEPT "winprint" key
5. Start the Print Spooler service.
6. Test to see if you can Add a printer.
PLEASE NOTE: I just figured this out and haven't done much testing, so DO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
I should also note that I experienced this on machines with the Thompson Reuters CS Print drivers installed. Uninstalling the CS drivers unfortunately
did not resolve the issue, but I am guessing that they are the most likely culprit. Perhaps their uninstall utility does not delete the offending registry keys as I would have expected.
We may be able to pear this down to deleting just the "Print processors" sub-keys that start with "cs" but I don't have any more
machines to test this on, so someone else will need to test this and let us know how it goes.
You will need to reinstall the CS print drivers after deleting these registry keys and repair Adobe as well (if you delete them all as originally
suggested). It doesn't appear that reinstalling the Creative Suite print drivers brings the problem back but not enough testing has been done yet to be sure.
UPDATE:
I ran into an issue reinstalling the CS print drivers on a subsequent PC.
It appears the install/uninstaller does not actually remove the drivers during uninstall and this creates a problem when reinstalling.
The easiest way to fix is to run the CS Print driver installer. At the end of the installation it will error out and tell you it could not remove the driver and give you the path. Just navigate to the path provided, delete any file starting with "cs"
and once that is done, rerun the install and it should work.
Please also note that all of the registry keys except winprt DO NOT need to be deleted. Only the "CS" registry keys need to be deleted.

I have the same issue, I upgraded to 8.1 and everything was working fine on all 3 computers. My subscription was running out on Kaspersky Pure 3 and I am not impressed with either the product or support so decided to remove Kaspersky using their removal
tool in safe mode on all three computers. After this all 3 computers had the same issue where the print spooler wouldn't automatically start, it had to be started manually after each reboot. Restoring the computers to the point prior to Removing Kaspersky
solved the print spooler issue on all three computers but now I can't reinstall Kaspersky and I can't fully uninstall it without error messages and the print spooler issue. After a week of talking to Kaspersky they admitted Kaspersky is not compatible with
windows 8.1 and cannot be installed but it will still work if it is just upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1. The next version of Kaspersky should be released end of November 2013. I am now left with a bad situation, I can't remove Kaspersky without print spooler
issues and can't reinstall it either. Installing another anti virus software has the same effect as it removes the remains of Kaspersky and stops the print spooler working. The only solution I have found, which it did on one of the 3 computers, which only
had a few programmes installed on it was to reset the computer using the options provided by Microsoft. This means my data is kept but I have to reinstall all other software. This isn't an option on the other 2 computers as they have a lot of programmes installed.

My Lexmark printer wont work either.
I don't want to have to buy a new printer just because of Windows 8.1 update.

Hi.
I solve that problem this way.
First i create bat file looks like;
@ECHO OFF
echo "Islemler yapiliyor. Bekleyin..."
NET START SPOOLER
exit
Its work successful manually.
f I start on windows start up as a service its become a perfect solution :))
simple but it's worked ;)

I am having the same problem. I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and now I can't print to my Brother MFC-7840W wireless printer (which was the only printer that it was hooked up to). I have Kaspersky Internet Security. I see several suggested solutions
here, but I can't really tell which one would work for me. Any suggestions on where to start?
Thanks!

Editing the registry key works for me (as done in the previous post). I have had to do it three times on the same computer. Not sure why. I also can't delete any printers in Control Panel. I have two printers installed and both
are the drivers for Windows 8.1.
December 18th, 2013 10:53pm
Is there a way to automate this registry change? I keep having the problem on the same computer and this fixes it every time. Two printers installed with up-to-date Microsoft approved Win8.1 drivers.
December 18th, 2013 10:55pm
Hi,
can you set this solution out in easier steps for me? how do you create bat file etc?
have recently upgraded to Win 8.1, and had an absolute nightmare installing a new printer (Canon MG6350) since - I can get it to print one document, then the print spooler stops etc etc etc same as above.
Cheers

I had the same problem. I tried to install CutePDF writer. it did not allowed me to install the printers.
My Dell V515w Printer was working fine with windows 8. The problem started the day I upgraded to 8.1 . It do not print.
Today I restored my PC back to Windows 8 and everything started to work again.

hi, we had well over 40 laptops on our network have the same issue after upgrading to 8.1 garbage(force on us by people that had no clue on windows, i'm a network admin) and after 2 weeks talking with Microsoft, we found the solution simple and easy(Microsoft
didn't really help at all) , just turn off the quick start up option, under power settings and BOOM!!! everything is good in spooler world. P.S windows 8 and 8.1 will be gone within 2 yrs, I promise. huge issue is coming around the bend with the network part
of 8.1 that Microsoft refuses to fix. And the new o/s will fix it, we were told..so that tells me. 8.1 will be very short lived. This answer will fix ur spooler issue on domain issues.
January 27th, 2014 7:43pm
I'm seeing the same problem with my HP and my Cannon pixma. I have norton, not k. antivirus, so it's not k.
I'm only seeing a problem since the recent 8.1 upgrade (automatic by Microsoft). Ideas appreciated. I need my printers!
February 18th, 2014 10:14pm
I don't know if this will help anyone at all, but it fixed it for me.
My Problem: Under networks, my computer could find the printer, but nothing could print. Anytime I would go to print it was like the printer was invisible to my computer. I tried adding a printer but kept getting error messages... Long story short...
Solution: I CRTL+ALT+Deleted and went to the 'Services' tab. I ordered everything my description so "Print Spooler" was easier to find. Next to it, it said 'Stopped.' I right clicked on it and clicked 'Start'. My printer worked immediately afterwards. (By
the way, I JUST updated to 8.1... it's definitely time for some bugs to be fixed...)
February 20th, 2014 11:06am
Has anybody found something that actually fixes this issue. I tried everything suggested. My spooler process keeps failing immediately. Does Microsoft care? I am just trying to switch from Mac after 5 years, I'ts not worth it. Something always breaks,
now I am 20 hours invested in fixing this basic printing problem. MSFT should be ashamed.
March 30th, 2014 3:50am
Does Microsoft ever provide any answers or help on this stuff? I have had same problem for over a month and nothing anyone suggests works.
April 13th, 2014 2:47pm
Hi had a major panic in experiencing same issue with printer canon 4500 and was ready to uninstall kaspersky but decided might be worth trying the standard troubleshooter and it worked!!!! Went to settings-control panel- printer troubleshoot and spool
all sorted. Hope this helps, rare occasion troubleshoot worked but maybe windows have added a patch to sort since original issues?

Roger,
of course quite helpful the explanation to quickly restart the printerspooler service. After the printerspooler service runs again my printer is also acknowledged again. Hope it stays like this.
Now at some point I'd also like to have an official answer from microsoft why they release an update 8.1 to my well working windows 8.0 that causes me to do many hours of troubleshooting and repairs of my home / business network configuration - instead of just
being able to continue working. Microsoft has my address via my ID - I'm expecting a small 3 digit redemption check in the mail. Please forward to appropriate authorities.

All I did was start the Remote Procedure Call service which had stopped (and is set to manual start).
FINALLY!!!! My Brother MFG got online @ an "WSD" port, from there I installed it on the same IP. So far, printing w/no problem at all. Except the constant Warning that its LOW on INK, all of which was wasted printing No Connection Errors and false
connection, because the printer was was never found on the network nor be added.
PS: And BTW I'm not even near W8, still w/VistaHomePremium @Gateway LapTop, that's still working!!! For months I've been procrastinating buying a new one, Windows user 4 + 25 years, breaking-up is hard to do... but guess, never say never to Apple... just

Hi,
My spooler just stops when I try to install the driver. Do have an idea what could it be?
Cheers,

I don't even have the environments folder. What does that means?
Even from an elevated regedit or cmd or Powershell window?
Hint: in Administrator Windows PowerShell you could use (apparently)
Set-Location HKLM:
cd System\CurrentControlset\Control\Print\Environments
dir

IBS - Can you just explain in simple terms what you did to resolve the printer problem. Thanks.

Found in windows 8.1: Control panel \ All Control Panel Items \ Devices and Printers
Right clicked on Epson printer.
Clicked trouble shoot and follow prompts until finished.
Open printing software like.."Word"
Open printer dialogue box and see list of printers.
select your printer and then print.
KISS
I have found that most printer problems start with the windows interface. If a printer is not recognized by windows then programs like paint and word can't access the printer. This works with networked and non-networked printers. So first enable
the printer in windows and then in the program you are trying to print from.
Thank you,
Charles
