Changed Registry Settings default back to previous Settings
Recently, on two separate computers, I have had trouble saving changes to the Registry.Specifically, I have been desparately trying to stop those infuriating balloon tips. I have changed the settings repeatedly under HKCurrentUser/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/EnableBalloonTips and giving the DWord value "0". But as soon as I exit and re-boot, the DWord value reverts back to "1".I have also tried to stop the Balloon Tips using Microsoft's "Fixit" programme, but it makes no difference - on re-boot, the DWord value is back to "1" again.Does anyone know how to stop this happening, please ? I am going mad with it.1 person needs an answerI do too

HiThanks for the response. I am using Zone Alarm Free and Avast ! on Windows XP Home edition. They are both difficult to disable during re-boot, so I don't know how to see if either of them is the culprit. However, I have used both of them for many years and this problem only started recently. On the other hand, there may have been an automatic update which is causing it. It never used to happen but started about two months ago out of the blue.

Hopefully they will, and you can then decide whether it's actually worth reinstalling ZA or not, depending on your requirements. -- Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Thanks for the reply. I will try to do that. Incidently, having not used the "Vote as helpful" feature before, I tried to click on it and it came up with "1". I assumed there would be a scale of 0 - 10, so I am sorry if I only scored 1 because I wanted to score more but I don't see how to do it properly !

The 'Mark as Answer' button is only available to the original questioner, and the moderators - and awards more points. The 'Mark as possible answer' button is more widely available, and I have no idea what happens about the points there. I would only consider your question answered if the possible solution that I offered actually worked.-- Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth
