Hi,You may try to run checkdisk from Recovery Console & check if it works.a) To boot into the Recovery Console, you may follow this link.To start the computer and use the Recovery Consoleb) At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following command & then press Enter: chkdsk [/p] : [/r]Note: At first, try to run chkdsk /p & check if it helps. Later, you may run chkdsk /r.Refer: How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XPHope the information helps. Thanks for the suggestion, the recovery console options are beyond my available time to trawl through but after having run numerous chkdsks and sfc /scannows from the OS dvd the machine is running with fewer restarts, they still occur occasionally but not so much as to frustrate all attempts at getting any work done.Ultimately my friend will have to reinstall his OS on his XP Home Version 2002 SP2, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+, 2.20Ghz 1.00GB RAM Dell desktop. Thanks to the mod for the move to the right section of the forum.

Does the error still occur if only keyboard, mouse and monitor are connected. If it still restarts the next stage is to try safe mode. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell
