Computer shuts down when attempting to access file(s) on external backup drive.
A month ago I copied files to external hard drive (Seagate - 1 T bytes). When I try to either open or find the properties in some folders on that drive my computer shuts down immediately. Only some folders have this problem, other folders are fine. I ran avast program on the external drive to search for virus, some folders (files) could not be read, specifically those where the shut down occurs. When shutting down there is an error message pointing to tfswctrl. Any ideas? Thank you.

Hi Boston,Let’s follow these methods & check if it helps.Method 1You may check in task manager if there is any tfswctrl.exe process. If it’s there, select the tfswctrl.exe process & click on ‘End Process’. Then check if the issue persists.Method 2You may also configure the computer in clean boot and check if the issue persists. It will start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and helps to eliminate software conflicts. The following link has steps showing how to perform clean boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353Note: Please ensure that the computer is set to start as usual by following the section ‘Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state’ from the article: How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353Hope the information helps.
