Connecting to a Printer on XP Home
I just got a new computer with Vista installed. My old computer runs XP Home. I am trying to connect, through my home network, my Vista computer to my Printer installed on my XP.But when I go to connect to the printer I get "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Access denied."I have searched all throughout microsoft.com and came up with no answers. I think the problem lies within permissions. For the printer: Everyone is allowed to print. Creator Owner is allowed to manage documents. And the Administrator on my XP has full control. Those are the only 3 profiles. So I tried to set permissions for it. Being that I have home rather then professional, I can't turn off simple file sharing. So I went to safe mode to try to edit. But the printer spooling service doesn't run in safe mode so I can't access my printer in safe mode. Anybody have any ideas?

Here's the workaround/fix for that. Add a printer and set it up as a local printer with a standard TCP/IP port. Enter the IP address of the printer and you should be able to install it.Delete the printer and add the printer again but via the network. I have found that it may print in reverse rather than normally. I had to delete the printer, re add it, delete it and then add it again and it should work ok from then on.Hope that helps.

Computer semi-novice here. Everything I know I learned from experimenting, never dealt with installing a printer through a TCP/IP port. Any simplification? Thanks ^^

Click on Add Printers. Local Printer>Create a New Port>Standard TCP/IP PortLeave at Auto Detect>Enter the IP of the computer hosting the printer. It will fill in the bottom field as you type in the top field. Hit Next and it should start finding it and ask you if you want to install the driver or not.Should be ok after that.Obviously make sure that the printer is set to be shared and allowed to be managed by the users.

Thanks again, but no luck. It wasn't able to detect the printer. Entered the computer with the printer's IP adress and it couldn't find it. So it asked me to install just the drivers without making a connection. So I did but when I attempted to print it didn't connect. So I uninstalled and and tried to connect again through the network and access denied again. As far as you saying "allowed to be managed by the users." Is that the normal default settings? I haven't found any way to be able to adjust permissions of printers. So if user management isn't default then it isn't set. Thanks again.
