Means you're not getting an IP address. When you say "when I plug it into my friends" what does that mean exactly? You're at your friend's house and you plug into his network or ?If that's the situation it means that his network isn't issuing your computer an IP address for some reason. Why would depend a lot upon how your friend's network is configured (which we don't know, of course)What exactly are you plugging into at your friends? Or are you talking about something else? -B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com | http://www.onenote-tips.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

Ah, o.k. What operating system is your friend running? It's possible his machine has been configured to use a static IP address that's not compatible with your network - you'd need to adjust the settings on his machine to accept an automatically configured (i.e. dynamic) address.Does his Ethernet connection work on other people's networks? -B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com | http://www.onenote-tips.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

Sure, it works OK...in your house. As it is meant to, by your phone-line if you are using ADSL. Or, by cable. But, when you take your lap-top.....to your friend's house, you are effectively trying to CHANGE the whole set-up.Wrong!Your Internet Account is NOT at your friend's address, via their Phone Number if they are using ADSL. However, you 'might' be able to use their Internet set-up........only IF their's is PROPERLY set up as a "Homegroup' network! (Which I doubt very strongly ISN'T!) You'd have to THEN re-configure your lap-top......to be ALLOWED to connect to the INTERNET, via their 'Homegroup' set-up. And I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that your friend's PARENTS.....WILL NEVER AGREE to LETTING YOU DO THAT! Scott, you're 'under their roof', and, you LIVE by their HOUSE RULES, got it! If you are using a WiFi modem set-up, now that's a 'different kettle of fish'. You can use it...at your friend's house, or where-ever else you'd like to!

Scottie is connecting to his friend's router so his computer needs to be configured to provide the router password. The Homegroup is not relevant unless the intention is to join the network.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Does your friend know the password?Click on the Internet Access icon in the Notification Area and you will see available connections. If you click on one of those connections you will be prompted for a password. You enter the password and the connection is made. Once connected your computer will remember the password the next time you connect.Currently on this laptop I can see four signals representing available connections and one is mine. The other three will be in adjoining houses. I caanot connect to any one of these unless I have the relevant password or one of the connections is not password protected.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Hi Gerry, What you are referring to sounds like when I connect with Wireless, but we are trying to connect via and ethernet cable. When you plug the cable into the ethernet port in my computer it works fine, when you plug it into Katies, it doesnt work at all and says invalid IP address. When I go into CMD and do the ipconfig/all it comes up with an ip addrss as a load of 0's. Could it be something to do with this and do you know if I can change this on her PC so it works?THanks

hi cookie, to respond to your above message, which may i add i found a little patronising, i am 25 years old and my friend i refer to is 30 and pregnant, neither of us have lived with our parents in about 10 years, so please do not ASSUME you know peoples situations...You'd have to THEN re-configure your lap-top......to be ALLOWED to connect to the INTERNET, via their 'Homegroup' set-up. And I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that your friend's PARENTS.....WILL NEVER AGREE to LETTING YOU DO THAT! Scott, you're 'under their roof', and, you LIVE by their HOUSE RULES, got it! get your facts right before you make such assumptions ... how did you put it... oh yeah... GOT IT?On another note, thank you for trying to assist, but I will stick to the other users on this forum who give CONSTRUCTIVE advice!!!

Find the Ethernet Adapter (probably says "Local Area Connection" and go to Properties. Then find Internet Protocol or TCP/IP v4 and go to the properties of that. Does it say "Automatically Obtain IP Address" on that first tab? If not, check the radio button to make sure it does.Does your friend have any 3rd party Internet security software (like Norton) installed on her machine? -B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com | http://www.onenote-tips.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

What if you try booting the machine in Safe Mode with Networking? Do you get an IP address (and thus connection) then?http://www.officeforlawyers.com/lawtech/tswin.htm#safe-B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com | http://www.onenote-tips.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook
