Control Panel, Live Mail Access blocked and freezes system
I recently changed by partition using Minitools Partition Wizard. big mistake! I then re-installed XP (thanks MS for giving me a key to replace my lost key!). All the updates and SP's since 2005 or so. Now I cannot access Control Panel (system freezes and must be restarted with Task Manager). Cannot access Live Mail (it loads latest mail but then blocks with message saying "Sorry, something happened and Windows Live Mail must close)I run Avast, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. I also ran Malwarebytes and Housecalls but found nothing. I used SFC. chkdsk/f chkdsk/r. There were some errors but the screen closed before I could write them down.Depending on what I do, I can sometimes run Control Panel with a desk-top icon I just set up, but not always. Sometimes when I click START, MY COMPUTER it freezes as well. CPU usage drops to pretty much zero (system idle process dies, I suppose).Cannot re-install Windows Live Essentials or Live Mail. I re-installed Windows Installer to 4.5 but still buggy. It won't remove Windows Live...says Installer not accessible.I am tempted to rerun the re-installation/repair of XP again. Can I re-use the new key I was given to replace the one I lost? Or will that cause problems again?

Hi, It looks like that the user profile is corrupt. I would ask you to create a new user account and then copy the contents and applications from old user account to new one. And yes you can use the same product key again on the same computer if required.Refer:How to recover the damaged user profile in Windows XPhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/555473 How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XPhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151Also I would ask you to install the Windows XP Service Pack 3 for a stable performance. It improves the reliability of Windows by installing the latest software updates - new drivers for the hardware and more.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=68C48DAD-BC34-40BE-8D85-6BB4F56F5110&displaylang=en Hope this helps. Thanks and Regards:Shekhar S - Microsoft Support. Hi Shekhar, I am running SP3.I tried 555473 but I could not copy the user account from the corrupt profile...it froze. I tried article 811151 but have run into problems with using the Search button (START, Search) which does nothing at all. I also tried to delete the old profile by using 305506 (delete Doc and Settings/old user but it would not go away from the main folder..an SP3 .xml file would not be deleted.)The new profile I created does not work. When I click on Reclycle Bin, it freezes. This whole process has also filled my C: partition (which is what got me into this mess in the first place when I increased the size of the partition) which is now 28G out of 29 filled. This was 19G when I started trying to recover my profile. I assume that something in my old profile was corrupt so I need to start everything all over again. I have back up of all my file on an external drive as well as on a lap top, so it's not a big deal. As long as it's a profile problem.I created another new profilile with Admin rights and nothing copied from any other profile. The system now freezes up pretty much whatever I do on all profiles.

This is probably related to a software driver. You need to perform a "Clean Boot" and go through the process outlined in the article on the link below to determine what is causing the freezing. How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" stateI don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points. Thanks. I will try that. Meanwhile my C drive is full.I cannot delete my old profile ("Cannot delete uUACTokenSvc,exe: Access is denied)The RECYCLER folder has 1.73 GB in it (four folders with Recycle Bin icons all empty...S-1-5-18, and then three more with additional code strings attached). I ran Avast on it and it checked over 4GB of files, none of which can be seen.System Volume Information folder has 3.34 GB which seems excessive as wellEven the Windows folder is at 8.74 GB.I ran the Clean Boot which is working fine...fingers crossed. Do I now reboot in normal mode or not?Windows Live Mail is not working correctly ...Cannot find contact, "something happened" but it works more than before. I cannot uninstall it or repair it. The keyboard is also changed when I go into Windows Live Mail...the @ is over the 2 instead of next to the # (above the apostrophe). But this is only in Windows Live mail.I am still getting Windows Installer Service errror messages when accesses Add/Rmove programs (except for those with their own uninstaller) And how do I recover all the space on my drive???

I performed a Clean Boot but then what? There were still some problems with the clean boot, but to be honest, the procedure did not explain what to do once it was clean booted. The guided process is not working, by the way. so if I do the clean boot again, what am I supposed to do after that? how do I check what is causing the freeze?

It did not seem to work. Ad-Aware still on Desktop and in Add/Remove. Tried to re-install and was AGAIN told the Windows Installer Service was not working. And now we are back to the system freezing when I click on My Computer. Can we go back to what I was supposed to do after intiating a Clean Boot? And now I am getting an access denial for Load Startup Services claiming I need to be an Administrator. Which now seemed to have gone away..and now Clean Boot again.Ok, after reboot I am still showing Load Startup Items box checked. I lost Admin rights somehow.

I lost Admin rights somehow. And cannot access control panel again.First, the loss of admin rights when selecting and/or deselecting start-up items is an issue with Avast. I have been working with them for some time now about this. Although you receive the access denied message you can, in fact, still make the changes. When the access denied message appears simply click Ok and proceed with the changes.I would not worry too much about the error with Ad-Aware. In fact, I would uninstall it and leave it. It really isn't the preferred malware scanner anyway. When your system freezes after clicking on My Computer are you clicking on the icon from the start menu or a shortcut on the desktop?A clean boot is designed to assist you in determining lagging and/or freezing issues via the process of elimination. You first disable all non-essential start-up items then reboot. If the problem disappears then you re-enable the bottom half of non-essential items and reboot. If the problem re-appears you simply disable the ones recently enabled one at a time to determine which one is causing the issue. You repeat the process for all entries until the problematic item is isolated and you know which one it is.You state there were still "some" problems even after the clean boot. Does this mean the problems were somewhat less or the same? Have you defragmented you computer lately? What is the size of your hard drive? Used space and free space? Hi JoelJ, Thanks for the reply. I finally reformatted C: Am now running 30Gb on C and 120 on D. Painstaking reload of XP SP2 followed by about 800 upgrades, reloading my hardware drivers and programs. Everything is now working fantastically well. What do you recommend instead of Ad-Aware? I am running Avast, Ad-Aware and Windows Defender on my system in addition to Windows Firewall. Previously I had the same along with Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes, and SpyBlaster. That was certainly overkill and slowed the system considerably. Your suggestions for a good defense would be appreciated.

Previously I had the same along with Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes, and SpyBlaster. That was certainly overkill and slowed the system considerably. Your suggestions for a good defense would be appreciated.I'm glad everything is working good for you now. Sometimes a clean install is the easiest, as well as, the best way to go. I re-install every 90 days or so needed or not. Of course I use a slipstreamed copy of Windows which contains sp3 and most of the latest updates thereby limiting the amount of time it takes to get things back the way I like them. I can perform a clean install and be surfing the net in about 30 - 40 minutes. Slipstreaming your Windows disc may be something you want to consider. It's really very simple.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial154.html <<< How to slipstream WindowsI recommend you keep Avast for your anti-virus. Perform a boot-time scan once a week. Get rid of Windows Defender, Ad-aware and SpyBlaster. Install Malwarebytes (Paid version if you can spring for it. Free version if not) update and scan with it atleast once a week. Perhaps once a month download SuperAntiSpyware Portable (does not install) and perform a full scan.Keep in mind, however, the best malware preventer is the user. Take a minute or two and read the article on the link below. Follow the advice there and I am sure you will see a difference.http://www.repairbotsonline.com/t119-which-browser-is-best I don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points. thanks. My system is much, much healthier now. It's the first clean install I've done since XP was installed five years ago. It makes a huge difference. If I had know how relatively easy it is to do it, I would have done it at least once a year.I switched to Firefox and re-downloaded Malwarebytes. Again, thanks.
