Creating a disc image on the network
Hello,
Every few months, besides backups, I create a system image stored in a network location. This was done without a problem for a long time. After changing ONLY my basic home router (Netgear DGND3300) to a VPN router (Netgear SRXN3205), the process strats and
continues for about 20 minutes before it fails while losing network connection and putting the router out of commission. No meaningful error messages other than the obviously lost network connection.
Can someone shed some light please? I stated the problem as clean as I can without details hoping a known simple solutuion would stand out. Please let me know if you need specific information I can provide.
Win 7 pro 32 bit
Network location: HP MediaServer running WHS based on Server 2003

Hi asasan,
Some of possibilities I am thinking of:
Check DHCP settings in your router. Look for timeouts to renew DHCP IP address
Assign static IP address to you network or at least the specific PC MAP the shared folder location and try copying a large data to see if connection breaking
Check for router firmware upgrade If you are on wireless then try wired If possible try a different computer to create an image

+ try a different wi-fi adapter if you are on wi-fi.
Why: some old crappy wi-fi drivers let transmitted data to jam the connection, so feedback from the server times out and connection drops.

Thanks for the replies.
Changing the TCP timeout did the trick, almost. The router still disconnects from internet in the middle of the process and needs to be reset, but at least the connection from the PC to the server (within LAN) stays intact until it finishes
after four hours. That is four times longer than before.
I decided to try a different router which is on its way. Will report the results.
