We new Dell Vostro laptops.. Running windows 7 Pro. We have been trying to connect them to a Windows 2003 DC. They are able to recieve DHCP addresses before going on to the DC as soon as they are in the domain we are now having a problem with the DHCP Client... The first error was about the service account being different which i easily sorted by changing the the log on account to Local Service... The problem is now I get an error "Windows could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer. Error 5:Access is denied" I have searched thru many forums and they all seem to think its the service account that has incorrect privilages, I have gone into the registry and changed HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\DHCP HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\DHCP\configuration HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\TCP/IP I have even reset the AFD and still no change

Go to %SystemRoot%\system32 and then right click on services.msc , click on run as and use the administrator account (Check if there is not an administrator account that is disabled. If you find it, it is the account you should enable and use) and finally enable the DHCP Client service. Tried that and it won't even start the services, and when i log on as the admin whether locally or on the domain still cannot start the DHCP client service

I have followed both steps and still can't start the the DHCP service, I even tried to unlink every GPO on the server still no change. I have taken the win7 computer off the network and still no success with the service. I tried starting AFD and still nothing now when I run ping from the command prompt I get an error saying "Transmit failed. General failure" and yet when I start command prompt using run as administrator it pings just fine. We have 25 laptops and all of them could get DHCP before they went into the domain as soon as they got into the domain dhcp client gets disabled

I think you installed an update which caused this problem. Repair the install the operating system and your problem will be solved. we have reinstalled the system and haven't applied any updates and anti virus, disabled the GPO link and still get an error , its almost like every time we make a change there is a new error poppin up

Even if you re-install the OS and the computer is not a member of your domain, the problem persists? Best regards.

When we reinstall the computer and the computer is not a member of the domain everything works well, its when we add it to the domain that it starts to give issues, we have unlinked all GPOs on the DC and tried but still the error comes.

After disabling the GPO, haven't you forgot to launch the gpupdate /force command? Best regards.

i have run the command more than once when i look at the event viewer of the client it shows that there is no GPO being linked

Are you sure you have not installed a software after the re-install? Because there is someone ones which can block it. (Maybe a GPO installed a software before you disable it) Best regards.

Arthur, have the same problem here, tried the fix you sugested including the Microsoft KB article, and adding Local Service to the administrators group as you sugested, and yet the services did not start. Debugging with Sysinternals Process Monitor I came to a svchost process started by services.exe not beeing able to open a registry path for setting a value.
