DNS Issue
I have three Windows 7 professional PCs networked at home, one is wired and the other two are wireless. The two desktops can communicate using DNS without issues. The Laptop can connect to both machines but neither machine can connect to the laptop using DNS. I can use \\IPADDRESS\SHARENAME and that works fine, but when I try to use DNS, I get the following error message "file and print sharing resource (LAP) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts." How do I fix this?

I'm not sure what you're using but it's not DHCP. :-) DHCP is the protocol used to assign IP addreses. You don't connect to machines with it. The answer to your question is a little hard to specify without knowing what you're actually doing, but you might chekc the laptop and make sure that it doesn't have a firewall blocking inbound requests.-B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

Sorry about that, it is correct now. I've turned the firewall off and it still doesn't work. Either way, if I can connect via \\IPADDRESS\SHARENAME why wouldn't \\PCNAME\SHARENAME work?

Check to see if Computer Browser is started in Services. Click on Start then Run , type services.msc and press Enter . Scroll down and see if Computer Browser is started. If not, right click on it and select Start , see what happens.Rich Why can't I be different and original like everybody else? - Vivian Stanshal

How do I fix this? Whet is the box you are using and how is the DNS being served? Is it a public DNS or your own? Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! The computer browser is started on both the wired desktop and the wireless router. I'm not sure how DNS is being served. The desktop is wired to the router and the laptop is wireless.

The wireless box should receive the DNS from the ISP. If its not, you can use some public DNS servers, I have some on my site. Put those into the static DNS area on you setup page on the router. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe

I added them and rebooted both the desktop and the laptop but no luck. Thanks for your help.

Is NetBios over TCP enabled? Posting the results from ipconfig /all on the wireless W7 machine would be helpful. Aaron

I reinstalled Windows 7 and that has worked. I didn't want to do that but trying to guess what the problem with the HP install was crazy.
