DNS Query Warnings & Errors
Some process is requesting the address of random hosts: Is this normal in Windows 7 or do I have some worm trying to get out of the box? These DNS queries appear at bootand at other times, and often occur after similar DNS query warnings for wpad.mydomain.net and istapi.mydomain.net. The 3 events probably happen before the network is fully awake. System Event 1014 DNS Client: Name resolution for the name uklwcfgjfm.mydomain.net timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. Name resolution for the name cunrtzomnv.mydomain.net timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. Any ideas or clues? Note: Stinger and MRT report nothing found.

The DNS names may be requested when you were working on your browser and accessing some websites or may be requested by some applications. The problem you've got is a DNS resolution problem. I'm not concerned with DNS itself - DNS is working fine for me. What is bothering me, and what appears to be suspicious behavior, is the RANDOM name being looked up. wpad and isatap are normal expected names, however uklwcfgjfm and cunrtzomnv aren't expected - no browser is running when these events are happening. It is similar to what some versions of the Conficker worm do. I'll add that my other Win 7 boxes are not looking up random names when they are "idle".

I have -- nothing comes up in Stinger, mrt, or Defender... and they are all current defs and seem to run ok. My question is whether anyone knows of any NORMAL windows process that calls out to random FQDN's?

Certain system services need name resolution sometimes. It is normal. If you want to know detail information, you may install NetMon3.4 and get the network tracks. You can see which program is accessing DNS server at that time.
